July 1, 1916

I'm standing outside my house waving to my mother and Lillie one last time before I'm sent to go prepare for war. "Stay safe." "I will." "Bye Lillie." "Don't go Aba, Iw'll miss you." "I'll miss you too. I'll be back I promise. Here." I give her my gold necklace I want you to wear this until I come back home and always think of me while I'm gone. Okay?" "Okay. Wlove you Aba." "Love you too Lills." I hug my little sister one last time before going to the car and driving off down the road to the Bootcamp.

At Bootcamp

"Listen up soldiers! You all are here today because you think you got what it takes to fight in the war! Well then let's see what you got! Run 10 miles around the camp, then drop and give me 40 push ups, then climb the wall, go under the wire, and jump into the trench! Move! Move! Move!" Me and all the other guy start running. "Hey. This training's crazy right?" "Um yeah." "I'm Melvin, Melvin Lovehart." "Ab- Martin, Martin Lovings." "Nice to meet you" "Nice to meet you too." "So why'd you enlist?" "Mm my father enlisted in the first war and died, so I joined to avenge him. Why'd you join?" "I want to help out my mom with the house. My father was injured in the war, so he was released and I took his place for him." "Wow, that's really sweet." "Yeah. It is. Come on let's finish up these miles before Sargent Will yells at us for not running fast enough." "He yells at us anyways." Melvin starts laughing really loudly, "That was funny." "Thanks".

10 Miles, 40 Push Ups, and 8 Hours Later

I'm lying in my bunk staring at the base of the bed above me, sore and tired. I wonder what mother is doing now. I hope she's okay. The living conditions went down ever since father died. Food was little and unappetizing, women and kids my age had to work to make a living, and so many people were starving and dying from the food rationing. Everything in the economy was falling apart as we know it. I'm can't wait for the war, so I can avenge my father and get home to my family.
