It's all her fault.
Four words that ran through Anne's head constantly. Four words that caused so much pain to fill up inside of her. Four words that stripped her of her confidence.
She could have saved him.
He was only an inch or two away. Anne could have stretched that extra inch or two and saved him. He could be here right now. He could be teasing her and Steve. He could be laughing and joking around.
Now that will never get to happen again.
He was supposed to live a full life. He was supposed to be there for Anne when she needed him. He was supposed to experience those moments of happiness and even sadness. He was supposed to find true love. He was supposed to have kids.
He should be alive.
Never again would she see his smile or hear his laugh. Never again would she get to make memories with her best friend.
Never again would she get to hear him call her Annie.
A sob escaped her lips as that thought entered her mind. She knew she always told him that she hated it and that her name was Anne, but she loved it. It was her and Bucky's thing, them arguing over her name. She thought back to the other day when he had told her that he had called her Annie since they were younger and that he would call her that until the day he died.
He had fulfilled that promise. Even as he had been falling to his death, he had screamed out Annie.
Anne put her face into her hands and squeezed her eyes shut. Her mind was messing with her again and all she could see was Bucky's horror stricken face as he fell further and further away from her. His voice filled with horror and desperation as he yelled, "Annie!"
Anne slammed her fist on the table in anger, her tears rolling down her cheeks as she ugly cried. She wasn't holding it back anymore and at this point she didn't care. Bucky was her best friend. He was more of a family to her than her own parents had been and now he was gone.
It was weird to think that it had been two days since Bucky had died. She didn't know how she was even still alive without him.
Over the two days her wounds had been able to heal. However, not even the super serum in her system was enough to stop the sharp stabbing pain in her chest as she mourned for her best friend.
Anne didn't even bother trying to cover up her crying as Steve walked into the abandoned bar she was sitting in. She just cried harder and turned away from him.
Steve sighed and made his way over to the girl, his hands shaking as tears of his own stained his face. He sat down next to her and silently cried as he reached out and took her hand in his own.
It was the first physical contact the two had had since Bucky died. Anne had been distancing herself from everyone and Steve understood that she needed some time alone.
But now it was two days later and they were supposed to be heading out again the next day and no one had even seen a glimpse of Anne. Steve had made it his mission to find her and after struggling to look for an hour he had realized where she had gone: the bar that the three had went to the last time they all hung out. The last place Bucky had been with them when they were happy.
