Anne's eyes flickered over to Bucky who was staring right back at her. Her eyes quickly turned back to Steve's front door and she waited a minute before looking back at Bucky to see he was still staring at her. Anne tapped her foot nervously as she tried to ignore him.
It had been about half an hour since the movie theatre incident and the trio had went back to Steve's apartment so that he could clean up. Steve had told his friends to wait outside and that he would be out in a minute. That had been a couple of minutes ago and now Bucky was staring at Anne who had began to squirm under his gaze.
"Okay, you're killing me. What do you want?" Anne asked finally. "What'd you get?" Bucky asked. She knew exactly what he was talking about, but decided to play dumb. "What do you mean?" she asked as she avoided his gaze.
Bucky gave her a look and Anne's eyes flickered over to him before she sighed. She then pulled the crumpled up slip of paper from the registration place out of her pocket before she handed it to him. Bucky opened it up and frowned at the sight of the crossed out 1A.
"Again?" Bucky asked, knowing very well why the 1A was crossed out. Anne remained silent and Bucky let out a frustrated sigh. "Anne, this is the fifth time," he told her.
"I know, Bucky. But I can't leave Steve, you know that. All he wants is to be a part of the army. How do you think he would feel if both of his best friends were in the army and left him at home all alone?" Anne asked.
Bucky looked at the ground. He knew how much him leaving had affected Steve. He could only imagine what would happen if Anne left as well. Especially since that boy was head over heels for her.
"You two shouldn't even be in the army anyways. It's dangerous," Bucky finally said. Anne scoffed and rolled her eyes. "We're strong. We can do it," Anne assured him. Bucky sighed and took his hat off before running a hand through his hair. "I know you can," he told her. "I'm just worried."
"And you think I don't worry about you?" Anne asked. "It's a part of caring about someone. It would be a problem if we didn't worry about each other."
Bucky sighed but managed to give the girl a small smile. Anne returned it and the two fell into a comfortable silence as they waited. A few more minutes passed by before Bucky put his hat back on with a smirk and said, "You really like him, huh?"
Anne froze for a second and thought about lying to him, but she knew he would only tease her more if she lied. "Maybe a little," she muttered, trying to play it off as if it were nothing.
"Yeah, okay," Bucky told her with a roll of his eyes. He then chuckled softly and said, "Remember when you used to hate him? That's some big character development right there."
"Oh, shut up," Anne said as she playfully shoved him. Bucky laughed and said, "I still think he likes you." "Yeah, right," Anne muttered.
Bucky opened his mouth to say something when the door opened up and Steve walked out. "Sorry. Took longer than I thought," Steve told them. "It's okay," Anne assured him with a smile.
Steve smiled back and Bucky chuckled and wrapped his arms around his friends' shoulders. "Come on, you two. Don't want to be late now do we?" Bucky asked. "No, sir," Anne said as she mock saluted him. Bucky lightly shoved her head and the three laughed as they walked down the stairs and towards the World Exhibition of Tomorrow.
None of them knew that tonight was the night that both Steve's and Anne's lives were going to change forever.

It wasn't long before the trio had reached the exhibition and they were only in it for a minute before two girls yelled out Bucky's name. Anne rolled her eyes. "Great. I'm third wheeling again," Anne muttered under her breath, but Bucky still managed to hear it. He gave her an apologetic smile before walking up to the two girls.
Bucky greeted them with his smile that he always told Anne had the power to make girls go weak at the knees. The girls instantly started hanging onto Bucky and telling him how brave he was for fighting in the war.
Not that she didn't think Bucky was brave for fighting in the war, but the sight of girls fawning over her best friend made her sick. It was like watching two girls drool and obsess over her brother and she just didn't understand why.
Anne watched the girls for a second longer and rolled her eyes as they batted their eyelashes and twirled their hair as they flirted. Anne then smirked and nudged Steve. He glanced over at her and she pretended to gag which both him and Bucky saw. Steve chuckled at her and Bucky gave her a warning look, but he still couldn't stop the corners of his lips from turning up ever so slightly.
Anne took the time to look at the girls and she couldn't help but notice that they were way prettier than she was. One of the girls had blonde hair and sparkling blue eyes while the other had brown hair and gorgeous brown eyes. Anne looked at their outfits and then glanced down at hers and cringed.
"Hey," Steve whispered and Anne looked up at him with a red face, afraid that he had seen her comparing herself to the girls. Steve only smiled and gestured towards a stand that was selling sweets. "Want to go with me to get some food?" Steve asked. Anne let out a sigh of relief and nodded her head.
Anne and Steve told Bucky where they were going and Bucky just gave them a small nod and told them to get him something before him and the girls walked off to go watch some man named Howard Stark.
Anne watched the girls leave and immediately felt self-conscious again. Steve glanced over at her and sighed before grabbing onto her hand. Anne looked up at him and he gave her a small smile. "Come on," Steve told her before lightly pulling her in the direction of the food.
The two walked over to a stand that was selling bags of sweets and waited in line. As they waited, Anne found herself glancing around as she compared herself to the other girls.
She couldn't help it. It's not like she hated the way she looked, but sometimes she got super self conscious and noticed that she didn't look like the other girls.
Steve gave her hand a small squeeze and Anne glanced over at him. His face was dead serious as he said, "Stop." "Stop what?" Anne asked. Steve just gave her a look. "I saw the way you looked between yourself and the girls that Bucky invited. You're even doing it right now," Steve said. Anne's face grew red and she opened her mouth to talk but nothing came out.
"You're perfect just the way you are, Anne. So stop comparing yourself to them, okay? You're beautiful," Steve told her with a small smile. Anne's face grew even more red, but Steve didn't notice because he had turned to talk to the man running the stand.
A small smile grew on her face as she processed the words that Steve just said. She gave his hand a small squeeze as a silent thank you. He didn't even glance at her as he payed for the sweets, but gave her hand a small squeeze in response.
The man then handed the two the sweets and they reluctantly let go of each other's hands before taking the bags. Steve then put his bag of sweets in one hand while Anne put Bucky's bag in her opposite hand. Steve then reached forward and took her hand back in his and the two walked back to the stage together hand in hand.
