AFTER THE PARTY WAS OVER, EVERYONE CRASHED SOMEWHERE TO SLEEP. The only ones awake were me, Stormie, Darry, and Soda.

"Where the hell do you think they are?" Stormie mumbled, worried for her sister.

"Ponyboy said he had to show Katelyn somethin' real important," I responded. "Whyn't he tell me, then?" Darry asked, but I just shrugged.

It was about midnight and the two left at about half past nine, so they were out for almost three hours.

"Better be something important enough to almost be home past curfew," Darry said.

I went into the kitchen and opened the medicine cabinet, taking out the bottle of aspirin, Dally ended up going home, but Two-bit and Steve were still here, so I poured two cups of water and out four aspirin on a napkin. I left a note saying to take two a piece, and to ask for more if they needed it.

Stormie and I are the only adult girls that live here. Since the two of us were the only girls that were older, we often took care of the boys. They did come over a lot, but they didn't do much- just sat around the television watching Mickey while eating cake.

That's actually how Steve and I first met. Steve was looking for a gal like me and my good ol' brother Sodapop fixed him up with me. I always wondered why he let me be in a relationship with his best bud, but then again, he was always a good secret keeper.

He came in, we shook hands, and the two of us were talking the whole time. Two-bit was there so he was making fun of the two of us. He told us we wouldn't shut up- which isn't surprising when you're talking about me.

After a few weeks of talking and hanging out, we went to the Dingo and watched a real nice movie, but it was one of them typical romances at the beach. We got in for free since we climbed underneath that broken fence.

We crawled back out of the fence, and we were heading back to my place. About half way there, he stopped us, and said he was waiting for this moment. He leaned in, I leaned in- and we kissed, right then and there.

It was a magical moment, and it was also the first time me and anyone have made a move on each other. He got down on one knee and asked me to be his gal- and I said yes almost a year ago, but Darry didn't know.

The clock finally struck twelve, but Pony and Katelyn were still not here.

[PONYBOY]

The two of us were about ten houses down from mine- ten houses down until I asked her to be my gal.

I was nervous, of course, but that's how every guy was before asking out a real nice gal like Katelyn, right? Her and I were still holding hands, it just felt right.

It was late at night, and I was surprised we weren't jumped yet. Was it even real?

I took my empty hand and pinched my cheek. I guess tonight was really a perfect dream come to life. Five houses down, a car's headlights interrupted the silence.

  "Pony-" I cut her off.

"It's okay, we're almost home, just keep on walking," I quietly said. The car drove to the side of us, slowing to a stop.

"You think you can just leave without sayin' goodbye?" the one driving said. "We ain't stupid."

"You apparently are, dim-wit," I muttered, but it was apparently loud enough for that guy who was driving to hear me.
