You throw your purse on to the couch and then head to the bathroom to start the bath. You yawn, exhausted from an insane day at work. What is everyone else's normal work days, it's over the top crazy for you. You, unfortunately, work in an environment where you deal with the constant fear of getting splattered with water. You stare at your face in the mirror and purse your lips. You look like a totally normal girl; except you're not. You strip yourself of your clothes and then step into the bathtub. You slide beneath the warm water and can already feel your legs coalesce. You sigh and lift your head above the water. You watch, smiling, as periwinkle colored scales cover your legs. A minute later, the process is finished. The fin of your long tail hangs over the bathtub. You grin and rest your head against the wall, closing your eyes.
Lee, your boyfriend, walks into your house through the garage. "Y/N?" He asks, kicking off his shoes. No answer. "Hmm." He murmurs, walking into the living room. He looks around. "Y/N?" He asks a little louder. His eyes go to your purse on the couch. "Y/N, where are you?" Lee asks, starting to wander around your house. "We have a date tonight, remember? Pizza'll be here in twenty minutes." He says, checking your room. The bathroom door is creaked open slightly and he looks around before slowly making his way to it. "Y/N?" Lee asks tentatively. He knocks softly and there's no reply. He pushes the door open and then loudly gasps, his eyes widening at you, asleep in the bathtub, with a full grown tail. Lee's loud gasp makes your eyes fly open. Your eyes widen as you see your boyfriend staring at you, his eyes wide and his mouth agape, his face pale. He shakes his head in disbelief. "T-this isn't possible." He breathes. "Lee, please, let me explain." You beg as he looks like he's about to run out of the house screaming that his girlfriend is a fish. "Wait in the living room for me, Lee. I need to dry off and get into some clothes." You say. Lee nods, dazed, and leaves, shutting the door behind him. You pull yourself out of the bathroom tub and fall on to the floor with a thud. You groan and reach for a towel to start drying off.
Thirty minutes later you come out of the bathroom in skinny jeans and a t-shirt, smelling the distinct smell of pizza. Lee stands up when he sees you. "You're back to...normal." He states, somewhat surprised. You nod, smiling. You sit on the couch opposite of him, the pizza box in the middle of you both. "For some reason I thought this was going to be one of our normal dates where we could cuddle on the couch eating pizza while watching a movie, but I guess not." He states. "You guess correctly." You laugh softly. Lee looks at you painfully. "Please, explain, Y/N, because I don't know if my brain can take this." He says. You take a deep breath and begin your story. "My mom was a mermaid. When she'd touch land she'd grow legs. That's how she met my father who was a surfer. They fell in love and my mom never went back to her ocean life. There were fears when I was born that I'd be a mermaid but I wasn't-until I turned 13. I guess that was part of going through puberty for me." You explain. Lee gets off the couch to sit next to you. He holds your hand. "How come you never told me? We've been friends for a while, Y/N." He says. You look at him. "I wanted to tell you, I really did. But my parents forbade me. They said that no matter how well I know a person, I can't trust them with this secret. I was going to tell you though, Lee. I really was. I was just waiting for the right opportunity." You say. You turn to look at him, frowning. "Do you still want to be with me? Even though I'm a fish?" You ask, grimacing. Lee grins and picks up your hands. He straightens and eyes you. "You're not a fish, Y/N. You're a mermaid." He says. "So is that a yes?" You question, smiling unsurely. "Yes, it's yes, Y/N!" Lee exclaims, pulling you into his arms. "I love you so much, Y/N. It's going to take a lot more than being a mermaid to get rid of me." He says. You laugh, relieved, and wrap your arms around him. "I love you too, Lee." You whisper. "I promise that I will take this secret with me to my grave, no matter what." Lee says. "Thank you." You breathe. After a minute of embracing, Lee pulls back to look at you. "So how does it work exactly?" He asks. "It takes about ten seconds for any immediate action so that gives me time to dry off in case of an emergency. The whole process takes about 30 seconds." You answer. "Wow." Lee breathes in wonder. "So you can breathe under water?" He asks. You nod, grinning. "That's so cool!" He exclaims. You laugh and hug him tightly, so glad he found out.
