You brush your hand down your horse's nose. "Good boy, Arthion." You whisper, smiling happily. He tosses his long mane and lets out a soft whinny.
"I know, I know." You chuckle. You hug his neck. "I love you so much."
Arthion nuzzles your hair and suddenly licks your ear. You squeal and jump away from him, bursting with laughter.
"Arthion!" You giggle, clutching your ear. He stares at you and snorts.
"Your horse and you seem to have an inseparable bond." Prince Thranduil comments from behind you.
You jump slightly in surprise and turn around, putting a piece of hair behind your ear. "Yeah, we're pretty close." You answer, blushing.
Thranduil walks over to Arthion and gently pets him, smiling. "He's beautiful, queen Y/N." He says.
You walk to the other side of Arthion and run your fingers through his mane. "Yeah, my parents gave him to me a couple of months before they died." You say softly.
Your parents were brutally murdered by Orcs when they were travelling across kingdoms. You, being their only child, took your rightful place at the throne. You've now been in the Woodland Realm for a couple of days. King Oropher, Thranduil's father, had talked with your parents, before their deaths, on arranging a marriage between Thranduil and you. You've come to honor their wishes and see if there's a spark of romance between you and the handsome young prince.
Thranduil frowns sympathetically. "I'm so sorry, Y/N. I-I couldn't imagine ruling a kingdom at such a young age." He says.
You shrug and smile a little. "It's the way of the world, I guess." You reply. Your horse neighs in assent and you laugh softly.
Thranduil watches you, smiling. "Would you like to go out riding before dinner?" He asks.
You look at him, smiling. "I'd love to." You answer.
---
Thranduil and you ride along the Forest River, laughing and talking.
"I haven't had so much fun... Oh, goodness, I don't even know how long." You say breathlessly once Thranduil and you stop on a large hill.
He grins at you, the wind blowing his flawless hair away from his face. "I'm glad you're having fun, Y/N." He states. He looks away from you. "If I'm honest, when my ada [Father] told me that you were coming—"
"You were angry and bitter." You finish for him.
He looks at you in surprise. "Well, yes." He admits. "How did you know?"
Arthion dances on his feet and you pat his neck. "Because I was the same way. When my parents told me that they think they've found a man for me, I was so....so hurt. It was like I didn't have a say about the matter. But when they died, I realized that maybe this is meant to happen. Maybe this is part of my destiny." You say. You look at Thranduil and he stares back at you.
"Maybe we're part of each other's destinies." You finish. You're both silent as you stare at each other for a very long minute.
Thranduil slowly slides his hand into yours, smiling. "I have a feeling we might be." He admits. You smile and look away, blushing.
---
You stay at the Woodland Realm for a whole month. Thranduil and you grow so close. You're in love with him, yet neither of you have made a proclamation of love. You're too scared to tell Thranduil that you love him because he might reject you.
"M'lady, are you ready to leave?" One of the servants asks you.
You sigh sadly. "Yes." You answer.
"Don't worry, you'll see the Woodland Realm soon enough." She encourages, smiling at you. You smile a little and nod. You follow her out of your bedroom and then into the main hall of the Woodland Realm. King Oropher and prince Thranduil are there. Thranduil's head is bowed and he's frowning deeply.
"Thank you so much for hosting me in your beautiful kingdom. You have no idea how much I've enjoyed it." You say, your eyes on Thranduil. Oropher looks between Thranduil and you, and is silent for a minute, hoping one of you will proclaim your love. When neither of you say anything, he clears his throat.
"It was my pleasure, queen Y/N. We hope to have you here soon." He says. You smile at him.
Thranduil wordlessly helps you up on to your horse. "Goodbye." You whisper, your heart pounding against your chest.
He drags his beautiful blue eyes up to yours. "Goodbye, Y/N." He whispers back, before stepping away from your horse.
Your guards ride up beside you and you all ride off into Mirkwood. You glance back at Thranduil and fight back tears.
Once you're completely out of sight, Oropher hits Thranduil in the arm.
"Ow!" Thranduil exclaims, rubbing his arm. He glares at his father. "What was that for?" He asks.
"You stupid boy! The woman of your dreams just rode away and you let her go! You let her go! What do you think you're doing?!" Oropher practically shouts. He grabs his son by his shoulders and stares into his eyes threateningly.
"Do you love her?" He asks.
"Wh-what?" Thranduil says.
"Do you love her?" Oropher repeat more firmly.
Thranduil lets his gaze trail after you. "Yes, yes, I love her." He murmurs.
Oropher gives his son a little shake. "Then go after her! Proclaim your love to her!" He exclaims.
Thranduil look back to his father. "But what if she doesn't love me back?" He asks worriedly.
"Of course she loves you back! A blind man can see it!" Oropher says.
Thranduil perks up. "Really?" He asks. Oropher nods.
Thranduil sighs with relief and grins, before starting to run off to the stables. He stops and then runs back to his father. He throws his arms around him.
"Thank you." He whispers.
"You're welcome." Oropher replies, smiling. "Now go!" He ushers.
---
You ride solemnly, on the verge of tears. "Are you all right, my lady?" One of your guards asks.
You nod. "Fine." You mutter.
"Y/N! Y/N!" You hear someone screaming. You pull your horse up and make him turn around.
"Thranduil?" You yell in surprise, watching as he rides towards you. "Stay here." You command to your guards, before kicking your horse in the flanks. Arthion sets off running like a bullet towards Thranduil.
"Thranduil, what are you doing?" You ask breathlessly, once you pull your horse up next to his.
"I-I couldn't let you leave without telling you something: I love you." He states in a rush.
"Oh, Thranduil. I love you too." You cry.
Thranduil cups your face in his hands and kisses you while your guards hoot from afar. You laugh and break apart from him. You caress his face and he smiles down at you as he holds you in his arms. You wrap your arms around him as he kisses you again, this time more deeply and thoroughly.
[THE END] I hope you liked it!
