Chapter 28: I deserve it too

{Derek's POV}

I parked my car in the garage and went inside the house with Emily. She sat down on the kitchen counter chair while she waits for me to make the coffee. I made us both a cup of coffee and sat down beside her.

"So, how are you?" I asked

"I'm good. I have my last two final test next week so I'll be free by the end of next week" she said sounding confident about her school.

"That's good. So that means you're free on your birthday then"

"Oh yeah. I forgot about my birthday" she chuckled slightly.

"You forgot your own birthday?" I laughed

"I was busy with school. I forgot about it. Anyway, when are you going to Alabama?"

"Ohh." I didn't expect that she'll be asking that question so soon in the conversation. "umm.. Probably next week. I'm not sure yet. I don't need to go yet."

"Oh, so you won't be here on my birthday.. but..but that's okay. You have more time with Alexis." she said

"No, I don't have the exact date yet so I might be here for your birthday"

"You don't have to. I won't be having any special celebration on that day"

You should! It's your first birthday here in LA, it should be special"

"Nahhh that's okay. I think I'm just gonna hang out with some friends"

Then a few seconds of silence passed by. She was stirring her coffee and I looked at her.

"I miss you Em. So much." I said and she stopped stirring her coffee.

"I miss you too Derek" she said without looking at me

"I.. I still love you" I told her hoping she still feels the same. She didn't say anything for a second but then she stood up.

"I can't do this Derek. I've been fighting my feelings for you for weeks now. We're doing great just being friends for now. I... I... thank you for the coffee." She said and grabbed her purse. "I have to go" she said and walked away from me.

"Emily wait" I grabbed her gently. "I'm sorry. I.. I thought that you.." I said but she cut me off

"I love you Derek. It never stopped. but I.. we have to do this. For you and for me." she said

"Okay, I know. Please can I just hug you before you leave?" I asked and she nodded. I pulled her closely and hugged her tight, as tight as I can. The hug lasted for a good minute.

"I wish this hug never ended" I said

"Me too." she said and I can feel her tears on my shirt. I lifted her head away from my chest and held her head between the palms of my hands.

"Please don't cry" I said as I wipe her tears with my thumbs then she smiled.

"You were always the one to wipe my tears away" she said.

"But I was mostly the reason why you were crying in the first place. I'm sorry Em" I said and kissed her forehead.

A couple of hours of talking with Emily, it was pass midnight. I grabbed my jacket so I can take her home. A couple of minutes of driving, we finally made it to her apartment. As I pull over in front of her place, I saw someone sitting by the door.

"Hey, Em who is that?" I asked and she leaned over the window to take a closer look.

"Oh, I think it's Blake. What is he doing here?" she said as Blake stood up from where he was sitting. I turned off the car because I'm not letting Blake be alone with Emily this late. Emily and I went out of my car.

"Blake? What are you doing here?" asked Emily

"My flight is tomorrow night and you promised me that we can spend some time tonight together before I leave but I think you had more important things to take care of" he said

"Oh gosh was that tonight? I'm sorry Blake I totally spaced. Come on inside." she said

"No that's okay. I'll just go. Goodnight" he said and started walking away but Emily grabbed him.

"Blake wait! Come on. I'm sorry please" she said

"You know what! I don't know what he did to make you love him that much because I deserve that too. I gave you everything. I was there for you every time he failed and he's still the one you love. I don't understand. Might as well just forget everything that we've been through because everything doesn't matter when he's around you." he exclaimed. Emily was the speechless. She didn't say a word when Blake left.

"Em?" I said after Blake left and touched her shoulder then she quickly moved away.

"I think you should go" she whispered. 

"What?" I was confused

"You need to leave. I'm sorry" she said and went inside her apartment.

{Emily's POV} 

I never should've left my apartment in the first place. I was just fine sitting in my room but then I had to leave to check up on Derek, who is not my boyfriend anymore, if he's okay. I mean how stupid was I? I should've just texted him. Part of me really liked the idea of going to his house but after seeing Blake that hurt when he left made me realize that going to Derek's house was a mistake. I was doing fine for the past few weeks, now I think Derek thinks that I want to get back together with him. I forgot about the reason why we broke up in the first place. We really need this time to figure out if we are really meant for each other. 

I finished all of my exams yesterday. I was relieved that I'm done with the first semester. Finally I get to spend some relaxing time before I go back home to London. It's been a week since I last saw Blake. I kept sending him messages but unfortunately, he still hasn't answered any of them back. I really wanted to go back to London as soon as possible so I can apologize to him in person but my flight is not until next week.

...

It's my birthday today. I woke up with a lot of messages on my phone. Mostly my friends at school and some of the friends I made when I was in Dancing with the Stars. Derek also texted me and I thanked him for remembering but that's it. I wasn't planning on doing anything today except stay at home and have a movie marathon but one of my friends at school texted me and asked if I wanted to go shopping today. Since it's my birthday, a little spending can't hurt right? Anyway, I got ready and my friend picked me up from my apartment about 3 o'clock in the afternoon. We went to a couple of stores and I bought some presents for my family that I will be bringing when I go home, and a few for my friends here so I can give it before I leave. We also went to the salon to get our hair and nails done. 

[7 pm] 

My friend and I was exhausted from all the shopping and walking around so we decided to head back home. I told her to stay for awhile and have dinner with me. I opened my apartment and turned on the lights.... 

"SURPRISE!" everybody shouted.
