Goodbye

I woke up early that morning, before my parents, or so I thought. I got dressed in my favorite cropped tank and short shorts. I never got cold being my father's child. I had his genes, I could keep myself warm. I pulled up my knee high socks and put on my boots. It was that morning I evolved a plan to run away.

Sneaking down the hall ways I grabbed my backpack. I threw some fish in it and went for the door. As I opened the door I turned around and took one last look at the only home I'd ever known. I took my scarf off the hook and walked out the door.

I made my way down the stepping stone path that led to our front door. I stared at the river that ran near by remembering the time my father taught me to fish. I could still see my father, happy, and I sitting on that log. I remember how impatient I was and how exciting it was to finally catch a fish. My father was so impressed but not as impressed as he was when I finally succeeded in my first fire dragon roar.

We lived inside the forest. We were secluded from from everyone else. My mom was probably afraid we'd burn Magnolia to the ground. There was stone bridge over the river and on the other side a dirt trail to town.

As I walked across the bridge for the last time I listened to the whistling of the water as it ran past the rocks. It was almost as if the river were saying goodbye. I stepped off the stone river bridge onto the dirt path. I could feel and hear the dirt crunch beneath my feet. I only made it a few steps before I heard a voice.

"Going somewhere?" I stopped in my tracks as the voice spoke. "You might make it far away, however, he will find you. He has knack for that, you know? Finding people that is." I turned around to see her smiling. She was tucked down near the bottom of the bridge close to the water. A pen in one hand and a paper in the other.

"You can't stop me." I told her. She only smiled and nodded.

"I know, but won't you at least come say goodbye to your own mother." She patted the ground next to her as if asking me to come sit. I walked over to her. "Fifteen and already so grown up." She said setting her pen down on her paper. She reached up and grabbed my hands. Pulling me down slowly to a sitting position next to her.

"Mom you can't talk me out of this. At my age dad was already doing jobs much harder than his level."

"I'm aware of this. You are so much like your father but you wanna know what your father taught me?" She held my hand never looking up my face.

"What?"

"Your father taught me that this guild is a family. It's my family and it's yours. No matter what you do or even what you've done you will always be welcomed back." Her grip on my hand tightened and her smile started to fade. "Right now your family needs you. Your siblings need you. Your father and I need you to stay here with your siblings." I turned my head away from her. How could I not? She was right, our guild is a family, a family I could never leave, and a family that would never give up on me. Her hand reached out to touch my chin and turned my head back toward her. She was smiling again. I smiled too.

"Your family needs you now to take care of those younger than you, to protect the future. Can you do that... for your father and I?" She looked deep in my eyes. I nodded. Her smile got wider. "Let's go inside."

In just a little bit the rest of my family would get up and we would all go to the guild, where my parents and everyone else would say goodbye.

Mom and I talked for hours after going inside. She made me realize that they had their job and I had mine. It was my job to protect the guild while they were away.
