Fairytail Next Generation: The New Beginning

A healing glow

As the sun went down we set up camp. I made another fire to keep us warm and Storm made some igloos to shelter us for the night.
After a night of rest most of us woke up refreshed. Layla and Sylvia were by the river for an early morning healing session. They both seemed cheery. Rin and Hikari went down stream to hunt for bigger fish. That left only Storm, Rose, Kaen, Zoku, and myself to watch the camp. Rose and Kaen were still fast asleep. I had no doubt that it was the first night we all had slept peacefully. Storm kept watch high in one of the trees, while I kept a small fire going to fight the morning chill. Honestly I didn't mind looking after my siblings and guildmates. After all they are my family. I just wished we knew what was going on. I kept thinking back to that day. I kept seeing the man who attacked Sylvia, the man who attacked me and my family. Who was he and what magic did he use? Did it matter? All I knew was that I was going to beat him. I would never let him get away with treating my family that way.

"Are you okay?" The voice called. Startled, I turned around as fast as I could. "I know you're not; you wanna talk about it?" Storms eyes looked like they could see into my vary soul. His face was kind and gentle.

"Nothing is wrong, why would you say a thing like that?" I said defensively.

"Well it might be because I can read minds" he smirked. "But it's probably because I could see the flames of your fire pulsing and growing. They react almost like your facial expressions."

I looked at my fire, realizing it was bigger than expected. "Alright, your story may have some merit". Storm sat down next to me.

"So what's up?" He said.

"I keep thinking back to that day. When I sleep I see unfamiliar faces, and the familiar faces I do see are hurting and angry. I keep seeing the man that attacked Sylvia. I just want to understand. You know? I just want this to all make sense, to know who they were and why they did what they did, but another half of me doesn't care, they hurt our family and that's something I can't forgive". Storm stared at his feet.

"I forget how much you all saw, you know, that you guys were even apart of the fight. For me and the boys things were simple. I ran out of my room and was told to take the boys and leave. I tried to question, but there wasn't time. I made an ice slide out the back window and we were gone. I didn't see anything or anyone so I guess in my mind the threat wasn't all that real, but you guys, you saw the fight, you know what we're up against." We both stared down at the fire for a while after that, until storm broke silence. "Is it bad?" I stared up at him questioningly. "You know, what we're up against. Is it bad?" I took a deep breath not really sure what I would say.

"To be honest I don't know. I wasn't there nearly long enough to truly assess the situation.... But I can tell you one thing... No matter who we're up against, I'm fired up" I grinned. Storm looked up and smiled.

"I'm gonna go check on Sylvia". He stood up and moved toward the stream. Just then I saw Kaen peer out of the boy's igloo.

"Hey there stranger, breakfast should be here soon. It's your favorite, fish." Groggy eyed he walked over.

"How is Sylvia?" He asked sitting down next to me.

"She seems to be doing well. I'm sure with the progress she's making that she'll be able to walk to the next site tonight, but just in case I want you to walk close by. Hikari and I are trying to figure out where we need to go next. What our parents would want, and what's best for everyone here."

"What about everyone back home? Shouldn't we go back for them?" He stared at me with concern on his face.

"We don't know if it's safe. I'm sorry, but we can't go back until we know." He lowered his head. "Hey" I called out to him. "You know everyone in the guild. They are more than capable of taking care of themselves." I placed my hand on his head. He looked up and smiled. He had my mother's smile and and it felt just as comforting as having her there.
