I felt the blood trickle down my chin as I drank from the boy. He was around my age and visited me often. I pulled away when he squeezed my shoulder and wiped the blood from my face with my sleeve. He smiled at me weakly and sat down on the couch. I ran to the fridge and brought him an apple and a bottle of water. He nodded his thanks and began to eat the red skin of the apple. Cullen was a sweetheart. He had been in the same orphanage as me and was there the night I was attacked by a vampire. The thing would have gotten Cullen too if I hadn't fought back. It decided I was enough and left. Now Cullen is not only my best friend but also my occasional food source. Once a week he stops by for me to feed, the other days I drink from blood bags and small animals. Yeah I know. Gross. It's better than being a killer though. I tell Cullen that I am going out for a jog and run into my room to get changed. I put on blue leggings, a black tank, and a blue running jacket before tying up my hair. With a nod to Cullen I head out of the small cottage and take off down my usual weed covered path. I put in my ear buds snd listen to the wonderful singing of Twenty One Pilots. I start singing along as I begin to pick up speed. As the corus begins I notice where I am. Minnesota. My home is in Maine. Yep. That is vampire speed for ya. I sighed, took my ear buds out and looked around. I groaned as I spun in a circle. Nothing but trees. I walked for a little until I came upon a path. It looked as if it had been trampled by deer but I knew better. I could smell human in the air and hear the heartbeat of a male and female. I heard the crunch of leaves and forced my fangs to stay hidden. I looked over at the shivering brush as a boy stepped out. He looked up and my metaphorical heart skipped a beat. His blue eyes were piercing and he had dark brown hair. He stood tall and was holding a machete behind his back. A girl followed and I knew not to mess with her. She stood tall and strong and had a gun tucked into a holster on her hip. She was holding a machete, like the boy, but wasn't trying to hide it. Her lips were a bright red and her eyes were a deep green. Her dark brown hair was pulled back into a loose ponytail and she was clothed in black leather leggings, black long sleeve, black combat boots and wore some black leather gloves. The one word I would use to describe her would be... Badass.
My gaze went back to the boy and he smiled at me.
"Who are you?" I asked. They looked dangerous and my spidey senses were tingling. They looked at each other before the girl answered.
"My name is Mel. Short for Melody. This is James. Short for James." She winked and James chuckled at her last comment. Mel's voice was strong and sarcastic. She radiated a feeling of safety. She seemed strong, loyal, and unafraid. I nodded to them and considered telling them my mame.
"And you are?" James questioned, pushing his machete into his holster. I watched the weapon with caution and from the look Mel gave me, she knew.
"Alice." My answer was short and sweet as I took a step back. James put his hands up to show that he didn't have any weapons.
"We aren't going to hurt you." James whispered cautiously. He was trying to calm me but I still felt terrified of he weapons.
"Unless you give us a reason to." Mel mumbled as she played with her machete. I gulped and felt the brush against my fingertips. I grabbed onto a branch and broke it off. If I needed it, I would use it.
"Why do you have those?" I wanted to know if they were someone to worry about. James chuckled again and stood straight.
"Park services. We have been asked to make a suitable path for hikers. The old one isn't bringing in customers anymore." I nodded and loosened my grip on the branch. James reached his hand out to take it. I reluctantly let go of my only protection. James smiled and looked at Mel to see her playing with he machete. He shook his head with a small smile and turned back to me.
"Where do you live Alice?" My mind raced as this question left his soft pink lips. Think quick!
"Not far from here. Walking distance actually." James looked at me curiously and nodded.
"Well I hope to-" He began but Mel stepped forward and grabbed his arm.
"He hopes to see you again but we really must be getting back to work. See you later Ali." Mel turned with a nod and began dragging James back through the path they had created.
"Bye." I whispered as they disappeared into the trees.
