It was approximately 3:37 in the morning, and the coffee shop was deserted.
When I decided to open Insomnia Coffee, I had great hopes for it. I thought business would be booming.
Turns out I was wrong.
The shop has only been open for a week, but I was starting to regret spending all that money just for all my hard work to fail.
I usually fell asleep at the counter, relying on the bell at the door to wake me if a customer came in.
I decided that today was gonna be another day of no business, and rested my arms on the counter, laying my head down on them.
As soon as I closed my eyes, the bell rang.
My head shot up at the unfamiliar noise, my heart soaring. Finally! A customer!
A flurry from the snow outside swept in as my first customer entered.
It was a boy, not wearing nearly enough layers to fight this devilish cold.
"Welcome to Insomnia Coffee!" I greeted. "I'm assuming you can't sleep."
The boy stepped into the warm light. He was quite a few years older than me, maybe 26 or 27. Insomnia curses anyone, I guess.
"Yeah, no," The boy replied, rubbing his eyes. His voice was low and rough, and not because he was groggy. He seemed upset. "I was really surprised to find this place."
"I am, too," I smiled. "You're my first customer. So, what can I get you?"
"Just a plain black coffee, thanks." The boy answered.
"No sugar or anything?" I asked.
He shook his head.
"Bitter are we?" I said, raising an eyebrow.
He managed a small smile, shrugging. "Yeah, I guess,"
"Well, I'll fix that right up for you." I turned to the equipment just behind me and started to work. "You can go have a seat if you want."
"Okay, thanks,"
After finishing the boy's coffee, I made a quick cup for myself.
I walked over to him, setting his drink in front of him, then sitting down with mine.
"What's your name?" I asked.
"Tyler."
"Nice to meet you, Tyler." I smiled. "I'm Jenna."
Tyler smiled as he took his first sip of the coffee. He made a face right after, saying, "Man, that's bitter."
"There's sugar and milk at the table right here," I chuckled, pointing.
Tyler started pouring and stirring in packet after packet of sugar, along with a splash of milk.
I smiled as he drank it again, sighing this time and looking rather content.
I looked over at the clock. It's 3:45.
"So what's keeping you awake, Tyler?" I asked, turning my gaze back to him.
"My head," He answered, his voice getting a bit gloomy. "It's been telling me things and I can't fall asleep."
"Oh, I'm sorry," I replied sympathetically. "That must be awful."
