She opened her eyes.

She heard sirens crying over the ringing of her ears.

She swore she heard a trumpet.

Suddenly, red lights twirled across her vision.

She saw strangers running to each other, embracing as they reunite.

She looked up, and saw the sky falling.

The highway became star-shattered.

A gust swept through, crying inside of her.

Run and run. It said. Follow me back into the sun.

She climbed out of her seat, falling through the shattered window of the car.

She began to walk, on and on, still waiting for forever to come.

I'm right behind you. A different voice spoke, making her freeze mid-step.

I don't know how to leave you now. She whispered, looking back at the tattered car he was still trapped in.

Don't leave. He begged.

But she has to leave.

This day was sure to come. It would come as sure as the night falls, sure as the falling snow. Why fight it? Why put it off? It's come now. She has to leave him.

But she never thought the light would break so slowly, the light that would guide her home.

It was off in the distance, just barely brighter and bigger than a star.

We both know we gotta let it go. They said in unison.

Love, be brave. She said. Burn all the maps, and let the ashes blow away. Guide him to where he needs to go.

Run and run. The wind cried. Follow me back into the sun.

I'm right behind you. He said again.

On, and on, she walked again, still waiting for forever to come.

I don't know how to leave you now. She repeated.

~

He opened his eyes, the same reunited strangers and blood red light filling his vision. He heard the same sirens.

In the corner of his eye, he saw his lover's face.

Her eyes were closed, blood trailing from her nose.

He called her name, trying to reach and shake her, but pain shot up his arm.

How did this happen? Did Blurry take over again?

He called her name again, gritting his teeth as he reached again.

His fingertips pushed her ever so slightly, but she was completely limp.

He called her name over and over again desperately, tears beginning to morph his voice.

More voices started talking to him, and hands pulled him out. He couldn't feel anything below his waist.

The numbness began to spread, as if his body were becoming hollow.

He felt like he was fading.

He saw them pull her out. He saw them check for vital signs. He saw one shake their head.

His eyelids suddenly grew heavy, and he couldn't keep them open.

He muttered her name weakly as he saw them cover her body with a sheet.

He let his eyes close.

~

She stood there as she watched them pull him out of the car.

He would be taken to a hospital, where he would be treated. Where he would be granted his life.

And she was leaving.

I don't know how to leave you now. She said once again. She couldn't stop saying it, because it was true. She didn't know how to leave him now that she's dead.

Then he sat up in the gurney, his body almost transparent. He was like a ghost.

She sucked in a breath.

He was dead, too.

She ran towards him, away from the sun.

She doesn't have to leave him. They can leave together!

She threw her arms around his neck, holding him closely.

But he didn't hug her back.

She pulled away, confused.

Follow me back into the sun. She said. I'm right behind you.

He shook his head.

She shook her head, tears filling her eyes. Don't leave.

He cupped her face with his hand, leaning in and giving her a kiss.

I don't know how to leave you now. He said sadly once he pulled away.

He kissed her one more time, her lips cracked and salty.

He wiped away her tears, offering a sad smile.

I don't know how to leave you now. She said, taking a step back.

I don't know how to leave you--

He shook his head, a single tear rolling down his cheek.

He turned around, lying back down on the gurney.

His ghostly form melted away as it returned to his physical body, bringing it back to life.

Tears flowed freely from her eyes.

She would have to leave him, even though she didn't know how.

The wind gusted again, screaming.

Run and run. Follow me back into the sun.

I'm right behind you. She choked out.

She turned, running to the sun, her tears streaming behind her.

His voice was the last thing she heard as the light overcame her.

Don't know how to leave you.
