Maggie’s POV

I woke up to the smell of smoke and the smoke alarm going off. It was loud. Is there a fire? I looked around my room and found that there was smoke everywhere. Oh no. I left my candle burning last night! It must have fell or something.

I started coughing. I got out of my bed, and started crawling towards the hall where I found my parents running out of their room and into Becky’s. I tried not to breathe too much smoke in, but I couldn’t help it. I started coughing some more.

My parents ran out of Becky’s room again with Becky right behind them. I tried to get up, but my knees felt wobbly. I was scared, and this is what happens when I’m scared. I fell to the ground and started crawling once more. Once I got to the stairs, I had to stand up. I stood up, and ran down the stairs as fast as I could.

There…right in front of my eyes was the candle that was lit last night on the floor. The couch was on fire, and so was the coffee table. It was slowly spreading towards the wooden TV stand.

I suddenly felt it really hard to breathe. The fire was blocking my way to the front door where the rest of my family made it out safely, probably thinking I was right behind them. They didn’t know I was still here. They didn’t forget me, they would never do that, I just didn’t get out on time. I heard my mom calling my name several times. I just hugged my knees in the corner of the living room, not knowing what to do.

I saw that nothing was blocking the stairs. I slowly stood up, and made a run for it up the stairs. I could get out through my balcony. I was almost up the stairs, until I tripped on the last few steps, tumbling down the stairs landing at the bottom of the steps.

Ok…I give up. I’m just going to wait until a fireman comes to save me. I hugged my knees again, and put my head down. I heard sirens and people shouting seconds later. Come on, come find me. Man, this fire is spreading everywhere. I have NO WHERE to go. Literally.

A few minutes later, I saw some water being sprayed over the fire by a firefighter across the room. I also saw other firefighters walking around the rest of the house looking for something. I stood to my feet and starting yelling.

“HELP!” I kept yelling until one of them looked over in my direction. He pointed at me, and came over and started putting the fire out that was around me. The rest of the firemen came over as well.

“Come on, sweetie…let’s get you out of here.” One of them said. How old do I look?! He guided me out through the door, and when my parents saw me, they ran over to me and hugged me.

“Oh my god, I am so happy you’re safe!” My mom said, in tears.

“Me too.” I said, pulling away from her, and looking at the house that was still in flames.

Our house…is on fire…because of me. I’m so stupid…

“Mom, this is all my fault!” I said, hugging her again. Tears started streaming down my face.

“How?” She asked, pulling out of the hug, and looking at me.

“I left the candle burning. I forgot all about it. I’m really sorry.” I said, crying.

“No! It was an accident! Don’t be sorry hun! They’re putting the fire out now. It’s not a HUGE fire anyways!” She said.

“But…w-what if we can’t live there anymore? We wouldn’t be able to afford a new house! This is all my fault!” I said, sitting myself down on the grass.

“Hun, don’t worry about it! It shouldn’t be damaged that badly. You’re right, maybe we won’t be able to live there anymore, but we can certainly afford a new house! Because guess what?” My mom sat down next to me.
