Chap 7
2011
"What?!" Aunt Esther shrieked and Dad cringed.
"Yeah. I was deported to the 1800s. It was the most..." I trailed off.
"We understand dear. You had a huge trauma. It's okay." Aunt Evelyn patted my back and handed me some hot cocoa. I gulped it down. With a yelp, I dropped the mug. Shit. I burnt my tongue.
"Oh dear. Mich, you are just as clumsy as you were." Aunt Evelyn tsked at me.
"Better clean up your mess kid." Aunt Esther snorted.
"Wait." Dad shouted, startling all of us. "You said you could mutatio buttons? Try mutating this mess back to what it was."
"You want me to what?" I exclaimed and my dad shrugged at my reaction.
"No need to over react. I just asked you to..."Dad started.
"Try to rewind time" Aunt Esther repeated slowly, enunciating each syllable, finishing off his sentence.
I took a deep breath in as I looked at the three expectation faces in front of me.
"I'm not sure if I can, but I'll try." Damn. I needed support. I stretched my fingers around my neck and fumbled around for my necklace. Mom, please please don't let my magic go awry again. Mom---
Where's that necklace?
I felt my face freeze. My dad frowned.
"Mich, are you okay?" he asked, leaning forward.
"The necklace! Is it there? Is it?" I stretched my neck out letting them see.
"Please say its there. Please." Dad shot a look to Aunt Esther.
"Honey, maybe--" I screamed, interrupting Aunt Evelyn. I pushed my jello legs off the couch and ran to the bathroom.
My disheveled appearance greeted as I peered into the mirror. My eyes descended to my neck.
It was bare. Nothing on it.
I felt tears prick my eyes. This was not happening. It's the only thing that I had from my mother. I could not have lost it. No. No.
"NO!!" I screamed. My family stood praise the door.
"Darling, its.." Aunt Evelyn started, enclasping me in her arms.
"Its not okay. It's..." I sobbed out.
"Mich. Calm down." Aunt Esther stated firmly, wiping my tears away. "Where did you lose it?"
"I'm not sure. I think..." I hiccuped.
Come on! Mich think. When did you last have it?
Back to the salon... I was running real fast from those thugs. Then Jack saw and asked me to go. Then I said no and then he said no an then I --
Wait. Rewind.
' "We get out of here!"
"No god dammit! Git!" he shouted and reached for my shirt and pulled it.
And the next thing I knew, something clattered onto the floor and I vanished. '
'Something clattered onto the floor'
'Something clattered onto the floor'
My necklace.
"It's in the salon! When Jack tried to save me from those thugs and I was trying to save him and he accidentally pulled it to the floor."
"Oh dear."Aunt Evelyn frowned.
"I need to go back."
"Who's this Jack?" my dad asked from he doorway.
"I'll explain later. Dad, Aunts, please bring me back to the past."
"Mich, it's not that simple. You see, time travelling is not an easy magic." Aunt Esther explained as I sniffed and pulled away from Aunt Evelyn.
"Why? We have three great wizard and witches! Surely you can do something!"
"Mich, its a powerful magic,a magic that was and is black." my dad explained. Black magic was frowned upon by magical societies and if caught doing black magic, the magical enforcement would prosecute you. It was a dangerous risk.
"I have to go back. I left mom there."
"Mich listen!" Aunt Esther shook me hard. "It's black magic! Do you understand!"
I sobbed. I left mom there. And now I was asking others to pay for my price. I was just a selfish bitch.
"Esther. Leave it." Aunt Evelyn murmured, stroking my head.
"Mich. I..." Dad started.
I sobbed harder.
"I'll leave you alone. Sis, come on."
"I'll stay with her." I felt Aunt Evelyn whisper.
"Please." Dad pleaded, his voice desperate.
In the end, they all left. And I cried myself to sleep in my room.
--------------------------------------------------
"Honey, at least drink this."
"I'm fine, Aunt. Evelyn" I muttered as I flipped through the channels.
"Mich. Stop being a bitch and just drink what she gives you." Aunt Esther finally said. That was the first time she called me a bitch.
"I..." I started an then I looked up to see my aunts staring at me, concerned and worried.
I took the cup from Aunt Evelyn's hands.
I could taste nothing.
My aunts had left, giving me time alone.
But I could hear them.
"Michael, it's killing her. Send her."
"You know I can't. It'll be breaking the law."
"You'd rather kill your daughter's spirit and not break the law?" Aunt Esther joined in.
"I.."
"Michael. Please. I'm begging you as your sister." Aunt Evelyn said. I felt tears prick my eyes. They were fighting for me.
"I.. Okay. How about I send her to the Sykes. They'll know what to do." my dad finally sighed out.
"Thanks Michael." Aunt Evelyn thanked.
"Yeah. I'm proud of you." Aunt Esther stated and my dad let out a weak chuckle.
"Just make sure she's going to be alright."
"We will." my aunts chorused.
I smiled as they came into the living room.
"You eavesdropped, didn't you?"
"I did. Who are the Sykes?"
"You'll see." Aunt Esther replied and smiled. "I'm glad you're back, sweet."
"Me too. Thanks, Aunts."
"It's nothing we can't do for our darling." Aunt Evelyn smiled and patted my head.
"How about a group hug?" Aunt Esther spread her arms.
I hugged them both, crying like a baby.
I love them.
