That Should Be Me

When we finally make it though yet another lecture of the procedures, Cassidy and I meet outside the classroom. I pull her over to the side of the hallway.

"Ok," I begin, "I had everything under control until we left homeroom. I was checking my schedule and when I looked up they were gone. I thought they'd wait up for me you know, I mean Niall especially considering he's my boyfriend, or maybe he doesn't want to be anymore, I don't know. Anyway, I made my way over to my next class figuring that even if I didn't them, I'd see them in trig, but they never showed. So I was walking to anthro, and you know that little back hallway or whatever?"

Cassidy nods her head.

"Well, I heard voices coming from over there, and they sounded kinda familiar, it was Niall and Louis, and I assume you know who else," I finish.

"No!!!" Cassidy gasps, "she wouldn't!"

"She did," I respond.

"Oh, she is good," Cassidy replies, narrowing her eyes.

"C'mon, I say, we'll be late for next period, we can talk more about this over lunch," I say.

We go our separate ways, and I rush over to zoology.

I walk in and see Harry. I rush over to the seat next to him.

"Hey," I say awkwardly.

"Hey," he replied giving me a small smile.

I don't know why I did that, this is so awkward because of what happened over the summer.

He doesn't seem to be affected by the awkward tension, he just seems content.

Maybe he's over me, I think to myself, maybe he found a girlfriend. That's too bad, maybe he could have been used to lure Mila. Maybe once Niall and Louis knew she was dating, they'd back off.

Whatever, it's doesn't matter, as long as he doesn't feel awkward, why should I feel awkward.

I take a deep breath and relax.

"So, um, how have things been going with you?" I ask, "have you met anyone?"

"Yea, actually, I met this girl in my French class, she seems pretty cool," he replied.

All of a sudden, my blood started to boil, as if I was jealous or something. What? Why was I jealous? I don't even like Harry anymore! Yet, it took every ounce of strength to put a smile on my face and congratulate him.

I was about to ask for her name, but the tardy bell rang, and the teacher called for everyone's attention.

By the end of class, I hadn't heard a word the teacher said, I wasn't even sure what her name was. All I could think about was, who was this girl that Harry thought was "cool".

Cool? Please, I'm cool, why doesn't he think I'm cool? Well he did, but you chose Niall, I remind myself. Niall, and look where that got you.

How was I supposed to know that Harry was actually a really sensitive and caring person?  Well you have known him for like ten years, I respond to myself.

"Well, I'll see you around Kimberly," Harry says, walking out the door.

"Bye," I say softly. I love how he says my name, I think to myself.

I make my way over to the cafeteria where I meet Cassidy. We pick up our lunch and then grab a table towards the back of the room.

I start talking to Cassidy, when Niall comes running up.

"Kimberly!" Nialls and, running up to our table.

"Oh, is this one of the periods you decided not to skip?" I ask.

"Kimberly, just let me explain," Niall says calmly.

"I think you've done enough," Cassidy fired back.

Niall and I both looked at her, surprised.

"Why don't you go back to hiding in that back little hallway with your new friend, because you obviously can't be bothered to hang out with your own girlfriend," Cassidy spits.

Niall looks at me in a pleading way, but I look away. He hesitantly starts to walk away.

"Niall," I call after him.

He turns around quickly and Cassidy whips her head around to look at me.

"Where's Louis?" I ask.

"Oh, um," Niall stutters, and glances over at Cassidy, who's playing with her food.

"Ok, that's all we needed to know," I reply, hastily.

Niall turns around, and slowly walks away, to wherever his destination is. It used to be wherever I was.
