SEPTEMBER 2001
I cannot believe this is the last night in my bed before starting Harvard! The last couple of years seem to have gone by in a blur - taken up by equal amounts of study, therapy and sex. I doubt I would have got anywhere near to Harvard if it wasn't for the love of my family, Flynn's emotional support, Bastille keeping me fit and Elena helping me let off steam in the best possible way. It's been hard-going at times, but just thinking of that fucker Linc continually expanding his business to the detriment of his marriage, was enough to keep me focused. How he could put anything ahead of loving that amazing woman is beyond me. Well his loss was my gain, but I'm nowhere near done with him yet...
A noise at my bedroom door makes me turn my head as it's pushed gently open and a beautiful dark head appears. I immediately bolt upright.
"Mia! What's wrong?" I ask sharply.
"Shhh," she whispers as she creeps in and closes the door behind her. She pads quietly across the thick carpet, pulls my duvet to the side and slides in. My hand automatically goes to her forehead.
"Are you sick?"
She takes my hand and kisses me gently across the knuckles. "I'm going to miss you so much..." She chokes on the last word as I see a tear slip silently down her face in the dim light.
"Oh Mia...no..." I breathe. I quickly slip my arms around her and draw her into me. "Please don't cry sweetheart. I can't bear it when you are upset."
She snuggles into me and sobs quietly. "I-I won't see you again till Thanksgiving in November. That's two whole months."
I cup her face, wipe her tears with my thumbs and kiss her nose. "Haven't I set up your computer so that you can MSN Chat with me online? You can text me, I'll ring you over the weekends and I expect plenty of emails with photos of what you've been up to. With your new digi-cam I bought you, you should be able to upload your photos direct to your computer."
"It won't be the same," she sniffs.
"I know...but I can't stay here for the rest of my life sweetheart! I need to go to college - get qualified and get a great job so that I can treat you!"
She gives me a weak smile. "I'd rather you stayed at home and I lived off my allowance."
I chuckle despite the growing ache in my heart. "Mia Trevelyan-Grey. What am going to do with you?"My first few weeks on campus had gone well so far. I have a room to myself - having got special medical dispensation - which meant I thankfully didn't have to share with anyone. So far every student I've met were either geeks, pot-heads, drunkards, sluts or all of the above. I had barely stepped out on campus when I was surrounded by a gaggle of girls all talking in overly high excited voices and inviting me to parties. I had to agree to attend just to get rid of them. Having been at all-boys schools for much of my formative years, I'll readily admit I find girls a little intimidating and utterly repulsive. When I had managed to bolt back to my room I found in my jacket pockets, four slips of paper with phone numbers on and two with not only phone numbers, but room numbers and favourite sexual positions!
Didn't anyone come here to actually study?
I unfold my map and timetable onto my desk and my cell rings.
"Yo bro! Is this a good time? You're not balls deep in some tight little freshman are you?"
I grimace, my shoulders tensing.
I know who I want to be balls deep in...
"No," I say tightly. "About time you returned ONE of my calls."
Elliot chuckles down the phone. "What can I say bro? I've been busy catching up. So many new students to get around..." I hear a giggle in the background.
Jesus, he has a girl with him!
"How's it going at Harvard? You finding your way around okay?"
"Yeah...it's cool. A bit intimidating and there's so much to take in...But yeah. It's enjoyable for the most part."
Elliot laughs. "Christian - you need to lighten up. You're a college boy now. What happens on campus stays on campus. Our parents can't see what we're up to. College isn't just for studying - it's your time to let loose and have fun. You've been to some college parties haven't you?"
"Yes." I lie.
"Good! So study all you want, just as long as you also spend time having fun, getting drunk and laying the pipe so damn good, they think you're a secret porn star! You brought enough condoms bro?"
"Jesus Elliot," I sigh in despair, running my hand through my hair in exasperation.
"Just making sure you stay safe little brother!" I hear muffled noises and I realise he's moved the phone from his mouth and he's speaking to someone. I hear a door click closed. "Sorry bro just wanted to get out of the room. Listen - if you need anything or you wanna talk, just get in touch okay? Even I found it hard to settle in college at first. But it will get easier and the quickest way is to get out there and mingle. Make new friends, join clubs, socialise and yes...get laid! It's all part of the process bro." He sighs softly. "Promise me you won't just lock yourself in your damn room all semester."
"I won't." I lie again.
"Good. Gotta go bro, I have a lecture in ten. Remember what I said though yeah?"
"Yes, Elliot. Thanks. We'll speak again soon."
"Be sure of it. Oh and Christian?"
"Yes?"
"If you run out of extra small condoms, you can probably pick up some packs on eBay..."
Shaking my head in fond irritation I end the call.
