Kota's POV
"Kota!" My mom yelled up to my room where I was on my computer recordong a minecraft mod review. "Can I talk to you for a minute?" Dang it mom, I thought. Now I have to do extra editing to cut that out.
I paused the recording and took off my headphones, placing them on my desk. "Sure!" I called and walked out of my room. Once I was downstairs I walked into the kitchen since I knew Mom was probably in there making dinner. I Grabbed an apple from the fruit bowl and sat on the counter.
"Kota," Mom sighed. Uh, oh. This doesn't sound good. "I have some news."
I swallowed the chunk of apple in my mouth and looked up at her. "Good or bad?"
"I'm afraid it's bad." She sighed again. i looked at her letting her know she could continue. "Well, you know how since your father and I divorced we've had some financial problems?" I nodded. My parents had just finalized the divorce about three months ago and my mother and I had moved to Grapevine, Texas. "Well, I'm afraid that because of that we have to cancel your trip to PAX."
"What!" I yelled. "No! I can't believe this! Out of all things it's PAX that you have to cancel?!"
"I'm sorry dear, I know how much you've been looking forward to it."
I was about to go back to my room which many kids would do, but that never solves anything anyway. "I'm going for a walk." I mumbled and walked right out the door.
I sat down on the grass and leaned back against a tree, pulling out my phone and pressing the record button. "Hey guys, MinecraftGoddess here coming at you from the Minecraft kingdom, well, not really, I'm... in a... park." I turned the phone around and quickly showed my surroundings before turning it back to me. "I'm afraid I have some bad news for you guys so I thought I should make a quick IRL video and show my face when I told you. So, lately, my family has been having some financial problems and because of that I am no longer able to go to PAX. This is very disappointing to me, but I hope if you're going, you have a great time. Later Guys!" With that I stopped the recording and put my head in my hands. God, I had been looking forward to PAX for months. Since my parents had divorced i had moved to Texas, was about to switch schools (I was homeschooled for a month so I wouldn't have to start in the end if the year), I had experienced lots of bullying for what seemed to be no apparent reason, though I do have friends here. Minecraft was really my escape from everything and I loved it. PAX had been all I had looked forward to. I was supposed to meet skydoesminecraft and the gang, but most importantly, I was supposed to meet Minecraftuniverse.
Jason's POV
"K, meet me at Starbucks at six... See ya." I ended the call with Ty and shoved my phone back into my pocket. We were gonna meet at Starbucks in about an hour to plan recording sessions for our next adventure map.
I looked up at the sky and immediately shielded my eyes with my arm. Geez, I thought it was supposed to rain today. When I attempted to turn my head away from the blinding sun I noticed a girl who looked about my age huddled up against a tree, her head in her hands. I debated over wether I should walk up to her or not but before I knew what was happening I was standing in front of her. "Hey," I said. She glanced up but quickly looked back down, pretending to busy herself with her phone. "Are you okay?" I ask.
"Oh, uh, y-yeah i'm..." She was cut off by her phone's ringtone but she pressed the ignore button.
"Hey, is that Eclipse?" I asked.
She nodded, still avoiding eye contact. "Yeah, it's my favorite song. It'a by a guy who plays minecraft on YouTube, MinecraftUniverse. Have you heard of him?"
I smiled to myself. "Yeah, actually, I have."
She continued. "He's, like, my favorite Youtuber. Some people tease me for being, what they call, a minecraft nerd, but I don't..." She cut herself off again when she looked up at me, carefully studying my facial features. "Whoa, what do you mean you've heard of him, you are him!" She didn't really freak out, but said it in more if a way that was a cross between excited and casual.
I laughed. "Yeah, I'm Jason." I sat down in the grass across from her and smiled.
"I'm Dakota, but, I mean if we ever talk again after this, you can call me Kota. And I watch your videos all the time. I love them." She smiled at me, not a fan girl smile, just a friendly smile.
I nodded. "It's nice to meet a girl star who isn't freaking out." We both laughed a little bit.
"Oh, don't worry, I'm freaking out on the inside." She blushed but didnt bother to hide it and i just chuckled and smiled. Something about her just made me smile.
We talked for a while longer and it turned out we actually had a lot in common, mostly gaming though. It also turned out that she lived on the same street as me (how did I miss that?) and she was going to start at the same school as me in the fall. Eventually I decided to bring up something I wasn't so sure I should. "So," I looked at her. "I don't know if I should mention this and you don't have to say anything if you don't want to, but earlier I noticed that you looked kind of upset..." I trailed off.
She hesitated but finally spoke. "Okay, Jason. I see what you're getting at and, if you're willing to listen, I'll tell you. I mean, who else do I have to tell?" She shrugged and I nodded as she continued. She told me about everything that had happened in the past few months. How her parents divorced, how she had just moved here, how she was bullied sometimes, how sometimes she just didn't know what to do but always seemed to manage to figure something out. She ended with the whole PAX situation.
I nodded as she finished talking and placed my hand on hers. "Kota, that all sounds frustrating, but let me ask you a question, are you happy to be here with me right now?" She nodded quickly and glanced down at my hand touching hers. I blushed a little bit but didn't pull my hand away. "Then I am living proof that there is always something good at the end of a frustrating experience, so you just gave to hold on and know that there is always light at the end of the tunnel." God, did I just say something that meaningful? I mean, come on, that came out of the guy who invented the word prizza!
Kota smiled slightly and looked into my eyes. "Thank you." She whispered.
I blushed, again, why am I doing that so much?! "No problem." Then it was silent. God, she was so... Cute. No, she was freakin' adorable! How could anyone pick on her? Everything about her was perfect, her curly reddish brown hair, her deep brown eyes, her perfect smile, her adorable laugh... Jason snap out of it! You're staring at the ground like an idiot!
Oh shut up brain.
Luckily, Kota broke the silence. "Well, I should probably get going."
"Yeah, I should too." I stood up and pulled her to her feet. "See you round?"
"Yeah I guess you will." She smiled and blushed again (a/n - so much smiling and blushing!). I was glad I could make her smile. I nodded and she walked off.
Crap, her number! I gasped softly. "Kota, w-wait!" I stuttered. Did I just stutter? I never stutter. Smooth, Jason.
Whatever, brain.
Kota turned to face me and I jogged up to her. "I-I thought maybe I should g-give you my n-number." Stupid stuttering. I only stutter when I'm nervous... Wait, did I really like her so much I was nervous?
"Oh, that'd be great." She said. "I guess I should give you mine too." We exchanged numbers and each sent a test text to make sure we had put in the numbers correctly.
"All right," Kota checked the time on her phone. "I should really get going."
"I'll text you later." I told her.
"I'll be waiting." With that she turned and walked away. I smiled down at the new contact on my phone, then shoved it in my pocket as I headed for Starbucks.
