361. The future director of 'Alien', 'Blade Runner' and 'Gladiator', Ridley Scott, was working as a designer at the BBC in the early sixties, and was originally assigned to the design the Daleks. But when time passed, Scott left to become a director, so the job fell to Raymond Cusick instead.
362. The Daleks were based on the Nazis! Their call of 'Exterminate!' is suggested to show their obsession with cruel eugenics and their dedication to total conformity. In 'The Dalek Invasion of Earth' (1966) the Daleks roll into London and turn Britain's inhabitants into mind-controlled, brainwiped 'Robomen' – a stark nod back to the once-real possibility of an Axis invasion of Britain.
363. When he was 13, David Tennant wrote in a school essay called 'Intergalactic Overdose' that he was convinced he was 'going to play the part of the Doctor on TV'. He ended up playing the Doctor from 2010 to 2013.
364. The noise the TARDIS, the time-travelling device, makes was created by rubbing piano strings with a key.
365. In an early draft of the very first Doctor Who script, it's strongly implied that the Doctor is planning to kill his future companions Ian and Barbara in order to protect his secret which was very quickly taken out.
366. In 1988, Paramount Pictures wanted to make a Doctor Who film starring either Michael Jackson or Bill Cosby as the Doctor.
367. The first Doctor Who novel had the quite awkward title 'Doctor Who in an Exciting Adventure With the Daleks'.
368. The name 'Time Lord' to describe the Doctor's species wasn't used until 1969, although the show had already been running for five and a half years at that point.
369. Tom Baker's famously long scarf as the fourth Doctor was created partly by accident. The knitter hired to create it, Begonia Pope, wasn't told how long it needed to be, so just used up all the wool she was given. It ended up 20 feet long (but was eventually trimmed down a bit).
370. It's not entirely clear what the Doctor is a doctor of. Over the years, he's both claimed that he is a medical doctor and also denied it.
