467. It's still not sure how Valentine's Day originated. The most popular theory is that Emperor Claudius II didn't want Roman men to marry during wartime. Bishop Valentine was against this and organised secret weddings. For this, Valentine was jailed and executed. While in jail, he wrote a note to the jailor's daughter and signed it with 'from your Valentine'.

473. In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear the paper with the name pinned to their sleeves for one week so that everyone could see it. This was also the origin of the expression 'to wear your heart on your sleeve' which I never heard about before.
