853. Before the terms "fall" and "autumn" occurred in the 16th century, the season was called "harvest".

854. According to a Greek legend, autumn begins because Persephone returns to Hades in the Underworld. Her heartbroken mother Demeter, the goddess of harvest and crops, lets all the plants die until her daughter returns in spring.

855. Men tend to find women more attractive in autumn. This may come from the "contrast effect": Because men are exposed to a lot of bare skin in the warm season, "attractive criteria" shifts in the cooler season.
