Chapter 8 - Needing Answers

Adam of the Shadowwolves

It didn't slip by me that Steve and Rue weren't following us inside, I doubt Mackenzie didn't notice either. But I guess we both knew they had to talk, I'm also pretty sure it was about me. Nonetheless, I wanted to give Rue the space she needed, she hasn't seen Steve in weeks and he's one of her best friends. She's told me quite a lot about what has happened to her and her friends and I immediately understood that the loyalty and love she feels for these three people, is enormous.

I can't wait to meet Alana and Jonathan, too. Though I'm not sure if this meeting with Steve went well at all, for me at least. It almost felt like I was meeting her father or older brother. I wonder what happened to her family, are they still in Blood Hounds? Why didn't they come with her? I want to ask her about it, but I don't know if she's ready to answer such questions. She barely even told me about how she escaped. In fact, she hasn't told me. Just that she did. She's still a mystery to me. A beautiful mystery. Though I've unravelled some of her secrets, like what happened at Howling Warriors.

There's still so much more to know about her. And I want to get to know her, all of her.

Rue skips into the kitchen happily, followed by Steve who rushes to Mackenzie's side. She's just smiling warmly at him, not in the slightest jealous of Rue who just had some alone time with Steve. I admire that, most wolves get all possessive, even at the most irrational times. Mackenzie seems to know when her mate and his friend are to be trusted.

She's a nice girl, too. Sincerely worried about Rue, even though she doesn't know her all that well. She's seen her only a couple of times, but knowing her mate cares about the girl is enough for her to care, too.

Rue comes to stand beside me and looks over my shoulder, or tries to. "What are you cooking?" I turn so that she's able to see the little sandwiches I'm preparing, it's nothing too outrageous but it's enough. Rue licks her lips in anticipation. "Can I give the bread to you?" She asks hopeful. I laugh, even in human-form she still doesn't eat bread.

"You can and you may." Her eyes light up and she squeals and hugs me close. I put my arms around her, too and chuckle softly.

From the corner of my eye I see Steve watching us like a hawk. I pull her closer to me and stroke through her hair softly. Rue sighs contently and nuzzles my chest a bit before releasing me and skipping over to Mackenzie. She goes to sit beside her and starts whispering, only thing is; I can hear every word. I turn my back to them as if I have no idea what they're talking about. Steve comes to stand beside me and smirks at me, knowing that I'm eavesdropping since he is, too.

"He's really nice, huh?" Rue's hushed voice reaches my ears. "Yes, you're a lucky girl." Mackenzie whispers back and I can easily pick up the amusement in her voice. She knows I'm listening in!

"I know, he's also really pretty don't you think?" I puff out my chest a little when hearing those praising words. I'm happy to know that she notices me in that sort of way. Especially since my own mate didn't. She just saw me as a burden who kept her from achieving her own dreams. Steve growls lowly and looks at Rue who's too busy gossiping about me to notice Steve glaring at her.

I pat his back. "She's just talking freely, don't scold her for finally finding the courage to act like a teenager." He glares at me for a few seconds until understanding crosses his eyes and he nods. "You're right, I must be happy with this." He agrees before smiling at the girls. Mackenzie sends us a knowing smile whereas Rue is still talking happily about everything she's learned while being here.
