Chapter 19 - Saving my hero - part 2

June of the Shadowwolves

It's lively with children playing and running outside, the women are surveying their surroundings - being in unknown territory must make them a bit uncomfortable. They're chatting quietly among themselves. I know they're all worried about their mates who are so far away from them. It makes me feel bad for bringing this upon them. Some of the women blamed me and my friends for escaping. But after being talked to by Graham and some of the other betas, they understood why we had to leave.

There're still some who are pretty hostile, but I try not to let it get to me. Only I know what I've been through and how bad it exactly was. If not for Jonathan, Alana and Steve taking me with them, I'm sure I'd have died somewhere between then and the upcoming year. I'm not sure how long I would have been able to keep breathing.

And it was only ever since I became a free wolf, did I finally start living.

Before, I was merely breathing, existing - but not living.

As they notice us approaching, they bow their heads in respect and the children stop whatever they're doing. They all come to us and I feel a little intimidated, but not as much as I did in the beginning. The wolf side in me is awakening and recognizing that I am no normal she-wolf, I am of alpha blood and I am rising to my rank. So with that in mind, I straighten my posture and hold my head high. After all, there is a reason the people I run patrol with are looking up to me as their leader. I'm worthy of their respect.

"Sir Graham, Lady June," they greet us. Since Graham and I don't have an actual title, but have been fulfilling the role of their alpha and Luna in the absence of their real leaders, they've come to refer to us as 'sir' and 'lady' to show their respect and acknowledge our ranking.

"Hi," I greet them back, receiving small smiles.

"Have you had news? We've been in contact with our mates but, what are you going to do now that unit A is captured?" They're all eager to know more, scared that more units will fall victim.

"We're sending out another team, everyone who wants to go can sign up." Graham notifies them, looking to me. I nod my head while finishing what he was going to say, "but we will decide who is fit enough to go. We can only take those who are prepared and are able to hold their own in the fight. Don't take it personally, but we cannot take any risks."

Once again everybody nods, understanding where we're coming from.

"Also, please think about what you're leaving behind, too. I would hate if some of you go out there leaving pups or nephews and nieces behind. Once we're out there, there's no turning back." I add quietly.
