Chapter 13 – Pack life

June of the Shadowwolves

Currently Graham and I are taking a break. We're eating a quick bite before the guests are expected to arrive. He's been giving me a tour of the whole territory, and after our break he is going to show me The Lines. It's what the borderlines are called by the pack. I'm really excited. I've never been to The Lines before. Well once when I stumbled upon their territory but I wasn't exactly in my right state of mind.

"How do you like it this far, Rue?" Graham asks me, he then takes another bite out of his sandwich. He's been really nice to me. I didn't know what to think of him at first because the first time we met I made the mistake of talking about his parents which then led to me finding out about his deceased parents. He got all quiet and stuff. He still isn't much of a talker, but so aren't I. So it's quiet between us most of the time, yet it doesn't matter.

"I like it. The territory is beautiful." I say while munching on my own sandwich. Graham nods in agreement.

When we're finished eating, Graham stands up and stretches his legs. I, too, stand up and together we walk further into the territory. "Usually I do this a lot quicker. When on patrol we run around The Lines to make sure no one gets in or out. This happens in groups of five to eight people. But as of this afternoon it will happen with groups consistent of at least ten people. We want to be sure our guests are safe. It's our pride." He explains to me as we keep walking.

"So you just run with ten people?" I ask. I've learned that no matter how stupid the question, Graham prefers me to ask them instead of trying to figure it out myself.

"Sort of, but you run alone. It's like you form a big circle. And usually there's a couple of minutes in between you and the person before and behind you." I nod my head, that makes sense.

"What if you notice a different scent, something you shouldn't smell in the first place?"

"Then you immediately mindlink the rest of the group and the leader of the group, which is often the strongest or the fastest, will mindlink the Alpha for orders. In the meanwhile two of the group will go and investigate the scent while the others keep running to make sure there aren't any other intruders around the territory."

I nod and think his words over for a minute. Being part of a pack comes with many responsibilities.

"Graham, how do you mindlink?" I ask quietly. He raises his eyebrows but soon his gaze softens and he smiles genuinely.

"Mindlinking is like talking to someone through your minds. As werewolves we're bonded to each other through a pack. Being part of a pack spiritually connects you to the other werewolves who are part of the same pack. It's to make it easier for us to communicate while running in wolf-form but also when someone is far away." He takes my hand to help me over a couple of rocks. "It doesn't matter how far away someone is, you're always able to connect with them."
