Chapter 23 - Meeting The In-Laws - part 2
Adam of the Shadowwolves
We've gone deeper into the woods, leaving Rue with her parents. If I strain my ears I can still hear them talking.
"Why did you ask her to become your mate now of all times?" Graham's tired voice has me focussing back on the situation at hand. "Of course she'd agree, after everything she's been through... Adam why?" He sounds genuinely concerned about his new found little sister.
I can understand though, he probably thinks Rue is overwhelmed with emotions and is more likely to say yes to such a serious request than when we've processed everything that's happened and have gone back to our daily lives.
"I have gone through quite a lot, too," I remind him. "Granted, we were pretty safe because of Devin and Miranda putting up a barrier around the prison building." I start shaking in anger. "We still had to break the silver bars with our own bare hands. Still I've got blisters the burns left behind." I show him my shoulders where the blisters are most prominent because I used them for banging into the bars.
"Yet I didn't think twice about demolishing the rest of my body. All I wanted, was to return back to her, hearing her voice... I didn't care about scarring, about getting hurt, she was all that mattered. She was worth it."
The first three weeks had been the worst. After the ambush which had gotten us captured, most of us had been severely injured. I had passed out before I even made it to the holding cells. We were slowly dying.
When I had come to, Jace told me Jonathan and Steve had been separated from us. It worried us, but Miranda assured us they were doing fine. The first few days, the guards would come frequently, they gave us food and water, but would also try and beat information out of us.
Both Miranda and Devin didn't want that for us and so they put up the barrier to keep others from coming within a 20 miles radius from our location. That way, they could keep us safe.
But being safe, also meant no food nor water. Unless we could somehow break through the silver bars that would burn us at the slightest touch.
But what other choice did we have?
When we finally freed ourselves, we started roaming the area. We asked Miranda to lift the barrier so we could escape, but the moment she did... Blood Hound wolves started attacking.
Jace and Tommy had gotten bitten pretty badly. For a moment we feared their wounds were lethal and wouldn't heal in time.
We then decided we'd sit and wait; hoping for our comrades to arrive. There was a river streaming through the little protected area we were in which provided us of water. Food was a whole other problem but we figured we'd just have to make a do with little insects and small rodents.
"I'm sorry for what you've all been through, but doesn't it make you think all the more that this decision you've made is made in a rush?" Graham asks me after I've finished telling him what's happened to us the last couple of months.
"No," I disagree instantly. "I've felt this way for her for a long time now. Even before we set out to end this war with Blood Hounds."
"Okay. If you're sure this isn't rushed, then I'm happy for you." Graham concedes. "Just know that I will hunt you to the ends of the earth if you hurt her."
"I know, I won't ever do anything that could possibly hurt her."
Graham nods in agreement, "I know". He starts to laugh softly. "My father may be dead, he'll find a way to have your hide handed to him on a silver platter."
