"Ron, have you seen Hermione?"
"Oh eh 'a-en. 'un-er 'ere ee i'."
Since Hermione wasn't here, Harry had to do it: he shot Ron a look.
"'Orry." He swallowed his mouthful. "No, I haven't. I wonder where she is."
"Hmm." Harry popped another forkful into his mouth. He hadn't seen her since Transfiguration when--
"Ron."
"Mm?"
"What d'you make of Hermione and Malfoy."
Ron took his turn to shoot Harry a look. Harry already knew what Ron thought of Hermione, period.
"Right, sorry."
They ate in silence. A thousand thoughts swarmed like the winged keys he'd encountered in his first year through Harry's brain. He scanned the Slytherin table. Malfoy wasn't there, either.
"Ron."
"Mm?"
"I think Hermione really did go with Malfoy. I thought she'd changed her mind."
"She told us she wasn't going after class."
"I know. Why would she lie to us?" Hermione really had no reason to lie. I mean, it's not like Ron and Harry could've stopped her from going. Boy, was she stubborn.
"Unless Malfoy kidnapped her." Harry raised his eyebrows in a sort of you-can't-be-serious look. "Be realistic, Ron."
At that very moment in time, Loony, erm, Luna Lovegood, skipped up to the table and plopped down next to Harry. She wore her Spetrespecs and her radish-looking earrings. "Hello Harry; hello Ron." She gave Ron a pleasantly surprised expression. "Wow, you have much less Nargles than you did this morning."
"Erm, thanks?" This is why they called her Loony.
"Luna," Harry asked. He was one of the few people who could get legitimate information out of Luna. "Why are you wearing you Spectrespecs?"
"Oh, just proving to Hermione that they exist." She gave the glasses a knowing tap. "Boy, did Hermione have a ton of those! But nearly as bad as you, Harry. You see, I have these tubers called--"
"Yeah, yeah. You've seen Hermione?" Harry interrupted.
"Well, I've got to go." Luna stood up and skipped away.
"Luna, wait!"
They followed Luna down several corners until she finally stopped. She turned around and offered Harry what looked like a feather on a string. "Here you go, Harry. You tie it to your bed post. It keeps the Nargles away."
"Yeah, thanks, Luna." He quickly grabbed the object and shoved it in his pocket. "Now, what'd you say about Hermione?"
"Ron, if you'd like one too, I could build you one." Ron snorted.
"Where's Hermione?" Harry repeated, this time inching closer to Luna. She was trying to avert the attention.
"Is she with Malfoy?" Ron asked. His voice seemed to ooze with jealousy. Harry turned to look at Ron inquisitively and saw his face was bright red as his hair.
"Well, the Nargles are certainly getting to you two."
And once again, Luna Lovegood pranced off, but this time, neither Ron nor Harry chased her.
