Yo, long time no see XD

So, I wrote this ages ago, it's a cool idea and a lot of people like it, but I'm not happy with the original. I'm re-writing it XD

Edited: 16/08/17 - It's been ages since I first wrote this, so I decided to edit it. I'll be making Benihime less mary-sue-like and changing anything that seems "too soon" or meh.

Edited again: 07/07/23 - cleared up some confusion! I literally do mean shinigami is written in the Life Note, not being dumb and not realising what it translates to!

Prologue ~

"Oh, sorry Kimura-san, I didn't see you there!" A classmate apologises after they rudely bump into me. I let out a sigh and force a smile.

"It's fine, don't worry about it." I say in a sickly sweet voice before walking away.

Benihime Kimura, nice to meet you. I'm pretty much invisible to most people. I'm good at staying un-noticed. Meaning that people frequently forget about my existence and don't notice me – which is why people are always walking into me. I don't know whether it's because I'm quite short, or if because I have some unknown super power causing me to remain invisible. Either way, I don't really care.

I don't have friends either, I used to in middle school but we went our separate ways for high school, and I just never made new friends. I prefer not having friends, I like being alone.

I'm seventeen and I'm not the smartest person. Well, I am intelligent, but my grades say otherwise. I'm extremely lazy so I don't complete homework and I sleep during lessons. I used to work hard, until recently. I've just lost the motivation to try, like most teenagers. My parent's aren't happy about that either, but things haven't been good between us since I found out I was adopted.

Oh well.

I slip through the halls and leave the school building, and head towards my home. My parents won't be home, they're always working. It sucks, but it's what gets food on the table. At least I have parents, so it could be a lot worse. I don't have any siblings either, my parents thought one child was enough. So I'll be all alone. I'm always alone, so I'm used to it.

The good thing about having no friends here is that I get home quicker. More time for anime, yay. Although, I do sometimes get stuck behind a group of slow walkers.

I quickly over-take a group of people and turn the corner down a slightly quieter road. Down that leads to a small park, mainly used for those who walk their dogs. About halfway, I trip unexpectedly.

Yes, I know. Falling over is always something that is unexpected, but I'm 17. I always thought that when you hit a certain age, your balance has it all together and you don't fall anymore. Well, it looks like my balance is still a bit wobbly.

I let out a sigh and scramble up, brushing the dirt from my legs and skirt. However, a corner of a white object catches my eye. I turn slightly to look at it. It's a blank white notebook.

"What the?" I mumble and I pick up the book. In bold black letters across the front it says "Life Note". I furrow my eyebrows and flip to the first page. There's no name, no address. I can't return it.

However, the first page consists of what I believe to be a very specific set of rules.

-The human whose name has been written in the note will be resurrected.

-This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind while writing the name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.

- The writer has 40 hours to write the person's name after the person's death.

What the- is this for real? I've never heard of a Life Note before... This has to be some weird prank. It's so specific though, someone must have way too much time on their hands. Why would someone make this?

I continue looking through the rules, "shinigami" and "kami" is written everywhere. What does a God of Death have to do with this? That makes no sense.

"This is weird." I mumble under my breath.

I look around, and as usual (considering most people are at work) the park is empty. Maybe someone dropped it earlier?

I shove the book into my bag and walk home. I'll check it out later, while I'm home I can browse the internet to see if anyone else has seen one before. Maybe it's a book from an anime show or something.

"Ha, I can't bring people back from the dead. That's impossible." I say out loud with a short laugh, before making my way home.
