Chapter Eleven

Turns out I'm not good at staying awake at all. Even when I drank a lot of coffee. I soon ended up passing out on my futon during the early hours of the morning, my laptop still resting on my lap as I slept.

I finally woke up late that evening and went straight to the laptop to turn it on. Luckily it had only gone to sleep after not being used for a while, so I was able to go back to L's files and desktop.

He's probably upped his security so it probably will be best to not let my laptop die to save another week of hacking.

Sitting on his desktop is another note addressed to C and I open it immediately.

C,

You must know that I'm indeed L since you probably spent ages trying to hack into my computer. I congratulate you on doing so as it probably wasn't easy.

Your theories are the same as mine. You have no new information that may be beneficial to me. Unless you reveal the extent of your powers and how you accomplish bringing the dead back to life, something that shouldn't be possible. I also don't agree with you bringing the criminals back. While I don't agree with another criminal killing them off, I don't quite agree with someone bringing them back. However, I won't ask you to stop since Kira may eventually give up.

L

I frown as I read the reply. There's no way I'm going to reveal the Life Note to L. He'd want to see it and I can't reveal my identity. Plus he'll take it from me to examine and I may not get it back, even if he does want me to carry on with what I'm doing just in case Kira stops killing criminals. The Life Note would be kept to be examined thoroughly and probably never returned. They'd chop it to bits to see how it worked.

I have to keep the Life Note a secret.

I open up Notepad and begin typing a reply.

L,

I need a name and a face of someone who has been dead less than 40 hours to bring them back. So I can't bring back people who have been dead years. I'm not entirely sure how it works exactly, I just know the rules. I think Kira's power may be very similar, in the sense that he has restrictions similar to mine.

C

As always, the file is dropped on L's desktop and I wait for him to open it and reply.

While I wait, I decide to get some food and coffee.

I place my laptop on the floor and leave my tiny bedroom to head to the kitchen. After searching through my empty cupboards, I realise I'm completely out of food and will have to run to the nearest shop to stock up.

Running a hand through my hair, I lean against the wall and stare at the clock. It's 8 o'clock. I'm sure shops will still be open, right? There must be a twenty-four hour one here somewhere.

I head back to my bedroom and rummage through some bags to find suitable clothing and head to the bathroom to shower (don't judge, but I haven't had a shower all week. I've been busy trying to hack into L's computer).

I dump all the shopping on the side and let out a groan. I did find a shop, but it was a half an hour walk away from my apartment. This is going to be bothersome if I'll end up sleeping late. I need to get some sort of schedule arranged otherwise if Mum finds out that I'm not eating or sleeping probably she'll come here and drag my ass back home.

Speaking of mum... I haven't called her in a week either.

Crap!

I dig my phone out of my pocket and dial her number, keeping the phone in-between my cheek and shoulder as I shove all the food I bought into the fridge or cupboards –wherever is appropriate.

"Hey, Beni! I was starting to get worried! You promised you'd call often!" Mum snaps on the other end. I roll my eyes.

"I'm sorry, I've been really busy. I forgot to call." I tell her. I leave all the details out, but I'm sure she won't press for any – especially because of what my dad told me.

"It's fine, just please call at least every other day. I just want to know you're safe. So how has your week been?"

We continue to exchange idle chit-chat, the whole time my mind being elsewhere.

Has L replied?

I need to gain his trust so he'll let me into the secrets of the Kira case. The quicker Kira gets brought down, the better.

I also want to find out more about my adoption. I have so many unanswered questions.

A/N: Sorry for the short chapter! I feel like this is a crappy chapter :/ probably because I feel pretty crappy.
