"Morning Heat"
Chapter 8
Angeline just couldn't force herself back to sleep after her late night encounter with Carson on the balcony. Her body clock was still set on California time, so the late hours of the night in Spain where nothing else than an afternoon stretch for her.
But as much as Angeline would have liked to blame her inability to sleep on the time difference alone, she knew too well that something else was keeping her mind awake. Carson was not just an eye candy, he seemed to have one of those deep personalities that keep one wondering about what's under the surface.
Angeline decided to keep the French doors slightly open so the night breeze would enter her room, and with luck the sounds of the distant sea would rock her mind to sleep. She drifted in and out of all kinds of dreams all night and, as the early hours of the day finally arrived, she could vaguely remember thoughts of her mom, and Maddy... and Carson.
As she sat up in bed, the moist air was still coming in from the open door. After a few minutes of enjoying the peaceful moment, Angeline finally stood up and walked towards her balcony. She leaned over, stretching out and taking deep pure breaths of fresh air. From up here, the swimming pool was so inviting that she didn't think twice!
She went back inside her room and to the walk-in closet, looking for the most appropriate bikini for an early morning dip. Though she doubted anyone else would notice her in the water so early on a weekday, she didn't want to send the wrong message by wearing something too daring on her first time by the pool.
Once the right swimming gear was on, Angeline covered herself with a bathrobe and stopped by the kitchen for an orange juice before heading outside towards the pool. As she turned around the corner of the house, she was surprised to find that despite her earlier assumptions, Carson had beat her to the water. For a second, she thought about quietly walking back to her room, and maybe waiting for him to go to work before enjoying the pool to herself, but as she was still considering her options, she heard him.
"Good morning Angeline!"
Angeline turned around and feigned surprise. "Oh, Mr Cortez. I didn't mean to disturb you."
"You're supposed to call me Carson, remember." Carson replied, faking annoyance. "And this is a pool, not a bathtub, so I think there's room for two."
Angeline was still a little shy around the man, but walking away now would look much worse than pretending this to be just a normal morning in the pool. She sat down on a long chair and sipped slowly on her orange juice, hoping maybe she'd take long enough for him to have to go to work.
Angeline tried not to look his way too much, but she couldn't help staring at him as he was swimming away from her. From all she could see, his back looked muscular and if this was part of his morning routine, she could understand why he'd kept in such a good shape. As Carson was now swimming towards her, she tensed up a little as he reached the end of the pool in front of her and stayed there, his arms leaning over the tiled siding, holding himself in place.
"Well... do you not know how to swim?" Carson asked.
"Oh, I do know!" Angeline replied, realizing too late this could have been a great excuse for not joining him.
"Then come on in!" Carson replied. "Enjoy it before school starts." He added while pushing himself away, doing slow backstrokes.
Angeline hesitated but knew that she was running out of excuses. She finished what was left of her orange juice and stood up, placing her hands on her bathrobe belt and slowly pulling on it. She felt nervous and her heart was pounding faster in her chest so she tried to calm herself down. "Girl. This is swimming, not a strip-tease."
