"Change of Plans"

Chapter 3

Angeline had managed to settle herself at the beach. She folded her jeans and took her heels in hand. Walking along the shore letting the water hit her ankles and her toes sink into the sand. She still had no idea how to process what she had seen.

'Why would he do this to me?' She thought.

She had given in to every request he had asked for. She could have been an untrusting girlfriend wanting to know his every moves, but no, she chose to make Derek happy and apparently happy, for him, meant leaving her out the loop.

Angeline stopped and looked up at the bright moon above. Cascading a beautiful hue across the ocean water. She heard a few giggles not too far from her right. She looked over at the two couples happily having a quite bond fire. Watching as the couples around her age laughed, enjoying each other, Angeline thought back and couldn't remember the last time Derek and her had shared such a connection. Even before he went off to college.

As her vision became blurry, she quickly dabbed the sides of her eyes. Trying to hold back the tears that threatened to come out. It was no use, she let out the pain she felt through her tears. Angeline cried not only for the betrayal, but also from the feeling of being used and played for an idiot. She couldn't deal with seeing him right now.

'I'll just play it off, letting him think I don't know he is back.' She thought.

Angeline smiled to herself as a crazy idea came to mind. 'Maybe I can see if I can leave earlier than scheduled for my trip to Europe.' She quickly got up and walked towards her car. She looked at the dashboard to see the time. It was as quarter to ten, her mom would still be at the shop so she decided to stop over and talk to her about her sudden change of mind.

Pulling up to 'Sophia's Delicate Delights Bakery' she could see the dim light coming from the far back of the bakery kitchen. She knew her mother had the front store alarm on so she pulled out her key to the bakery. Walking up to the door she unlocked it and quickly keyed in the code so the alarm wouldn't sound.

"Mom!? Are you back there?" Angeline walked towards the sound of her mother's humming. She smiled, leaning against the door frame watching her mother dance around while mixing fondant. Angeline never understood why her mother never dated. She was beautiful. Her light brown hair wrapped in a cute bun. Her body still fit as if she was still in her twenties. Although she could see in her mother's eyes she was lonely. She'd ask her mom often why she didnt date. Her excuse was 'she had no time for dating.' She knew her mother put all her time into working which is why she was so famous for her cakes and pastries. Which is why she had no time to date and experience other things. Now that Angeline was going to be away for almost a year, she worried for her mother. She only hoped someone would walk into her life... Sooner than later.

"Jeez! Angeline you scared the crap out of me. What are you doing here? I got your text telling me you'd be going out." Her mother questioned grabbing a cloth to clean off her hands.

Sophia looked at her daughter and knew something was off. She noticed the red rimmed eyes on her. Which only meant she had been crying. Sophia had tried her best to keep her shielded from the bad things the world had to offer but knew as she got older she'd have to let her daughter make her own decisions and hoped she did her best raising her to make good ones.

"Yeah, I changed my mind. I wasn't feeling up to it." She said sitting on the counter across from her mom. Angeline looked up at her mother, who wasn't buying it.

"What happened Angeline? I am your mother I know when my daughter has been crying. So tell me what's this about." Angeline's thoughts went back to what she had seen outside the Blush parking lot, and couldn't help but get a lump in her throat. She and her mom have a close relationship but she wasn't sure it was close enough to talk about her boyfriend problems. She smiled up at her mom.
