"Eating Out"
Chapter 19
The trio was greeted by the owner of the pizzaria, Don Carlo himself, and they were quickly shown to a round table with a red and white checkered tablecloth in the far corner of the restaurant. As was his habit, Carson chose the chair that would keep him with his back to the brick wall. He liked being able to see who entered any room he was in. Angeline sat to his left and his daughter settled for the chair to his right.
The waiter came within minutes and placed a pitcher of water and a few appetizer, handed them the menus and informed them he would be back in five minutes to take their order. Carson was a regular and already knew he would go for the Calzone Di Tonno, so he ignored the food menu and glanced through the wine list instead.
The restaurant was about half full on a weekday, but it still took the waiter a good fifteen minutes to be back and scribble down their order on his little notepad. Angeline decided to try the Pizza Vegetariana while Sabrina ordered a Insalate Caprese; a salad. After putting a lot of thoughts into it, Carson selected a Garnacha wine that was advertised as having sweetness and structure, two qualities he enjoyed in anything, wine or otherwise.
Each of the twelve tables on this side of the restaurant had a small candle burning, creating most of the light besides a the dim glow of a few additional projectors directed at the red bricks on the wall. It created an overall atmosphere of peace and warmth that most customers enjoyed.
"This place is perfect for a date." Carson said while buttering up a piece of warm bread.
Both girls looked at him but only Sabrina replied.
"Well, dad, don't get your hopes too high, we're only here for a bite."
Speaking of bite, Angeline decided to take it and joined in the conversation.
"Hey. I wouldn't mind a date here!" She said.
The waiter turned the corner holding a bottle of wine at the very same moment.
"Be my guest." Carson whispered while looking in direction. Sabrina chuckled but her dad was greeted by a light kick on the shin from Angeline. The waiter uncorked the bottle in front of them and offered to have Carson taste a sample before serving all three guests and leaving the bottle on the center of the table.
Carson was so used to having Sabrina enjoy a good bottle of wine with him at dinner that he didn't even consider objecting to Angeline getting a glass of the red nectar.
"How does it feel to be an adult here?" He asked her, referring to how anyone over eighteen years of age was allowed to drink and gamble in Spain, among many other things.
"I'm still learning." Angeline replied with a smile while bringing her glass to her lips.
"Oh, you'll learn fast!" Sabrina offered as an advice. "Actually, I think I can speak for my dad and I when I say we've already noticed quite a change from the day we picked you up at the airport."
Angeline had to agree. She recreated the image in her mind of Carson holding that big sign with her name on it and couldn't help but smile. They both had done already so much for them, and she had learned so much in very little time. She had become a woman, she thought to herself as she felt a well-placed tingle that forced her to glance at her lover. This man had ignited a fire inside her that was now burning wild.
"I feel different too." She finally responded thoughtfully. "Sometimes I even wonder if my mom and friends back home will recognize me." She added with a chuckle.
"I'd say poor Derek already had a hard time recognizing you." Carson dared.
"Who's Derek?" Angeline replied.
