A New York State Of Mind.
Chapter 14
Roxbury was troubled. The transition from world photo-reporter to model hunter had been relatively smooth, and he had made quite a name for himself during his stay in Europe before establishing himself back at home in Manhattan, but his last business decision was about to throw him a curve ball..
After a few weeks settling down and remodeling his newly acquired loft, it had taken him some time to get back into the groove and find the perfect girl for his client. He was fairly confident Layla was a diamond in the rough, but he had put all his chips on this latest find, and her past could spell trouble.
His guts were telling to not give up on her, to even invest more of his time into her raw potential and carry her to the top. But for every right decision he made based on instincts alone, he remembered quite a few mishaps as well. The right thing to do, business-wise, was to expend his portfolio once again and start finding new faces.
His website had been up and running for about a month now, so it was time he'd change the "back to business soon" on the main page to "Now hiring". Even though he often used the services of call centers and off-site secretarial agencies for his clerical duties, Roxbury had decided long ago that the best way to spot new talents was to have a direct connection with the applicants. Especially on the initial contact.
He had just come back from a much needed talk with Layla and the night seemed to be preparing itself for some serious rain.
Roxbury threw the car keys on the little table by the front door and managed to take his shoes off while reading the day's mail all at once. He walked to the music system he had set up in the middle of his loft, the heart of the apartment, and took an Otis Redding Jr vinyl record out of its paper sleeve before placing it on the turn table. The diamond made a crisp sound as it lowered itself on the grooved track, but Roxbury loved that sound on old-time records.
After a few more preparations, namely getting a bottle of wine and finding a clean glass, Roxbury sat down on the leather couch and opened his laptop. It was time to connect with the world se new technologies to his benefit. He logged onto his website and found his way through the "clicking maze" to reach the section where people could contact him directly and upload documents.
The first few were left randomly by some IT companies basically telling him his website could use their help to generate more traffic on search engines. He deleted them all without reading them and started looking at the few messages left by real people.
Out of the handful of files and messages, Roxbury didn't see any difference maker, but knowing how the modeling and fashion world could make, or break, any girl's hopes, he took the time to personally reply to every request he had received.
A full bottle of wine later, Roxbury was down to his last message, a young Korean girl who wanted to move to the Western world but had no other means to succeed but her looks. She had the looks to be successful, but the logistics of handling someone from a different country were too much too handle, at least in the early stages of potential fame. Roxbury took extra time to guide the young Yeon through each steps she should be taking in her own country before contacting him again.
As he hit the send button, an email came through. For a moment Roxbury thought this was the automatic response telling him the recipient didn't exist, and he was about to cuss after spending so long thinking and typing his reply, but he was quick to realize this was a new message that had just came through. Looking at the time on the bottom right corner of his screen, he realized it was already 11:38pm so Roxbury made a mental note that this was probably coming from another country. He clicked on the inbox and started reading.
