Chapter Thirty One: Lost Stars

HAZEL

We emerged in the wooded area about a mile away from the house. Jake accidently turned his light on but Mickey was quick to slap it out of his hand stating we didn't know where exactly the hunters were lurking and we couldn't afford to give our location away. Jake apologised and Mickey said he was sorry for snapping but this situation was serious and the five of us would need to pull on all our skills to get out alive.

"The hunters wouldn't be stupid enough to leave the woods alone would they?"

PJ shook his head while Mickey paced on the spot, Jake made a valid point.

"It's kind of ironic that this started in some woods and now it ends back where it began."

I rubbed my belly remembering the night I became a werewolf after nearly being killed by a hunter who thought I was supernatural when I was actually human until Adam turned me and saved my life.

"You coming into our lives was the best thing Hazel, you changed not only Adam for the better but the whole pack."

I shot Mickey a small smile, I once stated that if I could go back to that night in the woods I wouldn't have gone to the party and stayed human. But now even in a life and death situation I had a family who loved me, and a partner who was the father to my unborn children. I wouldn't ask for anything different.

"Err guys I hate to break up this little pity party but shouldn't we make a move? I mean Jake is right the hunters could already be scoping out the wood."

We all rolled our eyes at Rachel but knew she was telling the truth, we couldn't stay still like sitting ducks and wait to be picked off one by one.

"Can you make a mental link with James?"

She nodded and smiled.

"Yeah I just need to get a lock on him Mickey. What's the plan for the rest of them?"

PJ stood by my side and put a protective arm around me.

"I'll stick with Hazel and Rachel to try and find higher ground. That leaves Mickey and Jake to find a way to make the phone work just in case Rachel can't make a link."

"That sounds good PJ. Jake I have something for you if you're coming with me."

My eyes widened as Mickey pulled a gun out of the bag on his back and handed it casually towards Jake who looked just as surprised as me. He took it with shaky hands and clicked off the safety, he'd never held a real gun and all the video games he played didn't compare to the real thing.

"You're the only human Jake and need a way to protect yourself. It's kill or be killed, aim and pull the trigger."

Jake gulped and slid the gun into the belt of his trousers after clicking the safety back on.

"Shit just got real guys; we should probably split up now."

"See you in a bit Jake."

Rachel and I waved at him before he disappeared into the woods after Mickey. PJ motioned towards the path leading up and further into the woods.

"We need to get to high ground where we can protect ourselves until the others come. I'll go first, and then Hazel and Rachel you bring up the rear."

Rachel nodded and I watched as her eyes glazed over and she started to chant under he breath as Mickey tugged me towards the path.

"I thought she was trying to talk to James, it sounds like gibberish PJ."

PJ shakes his head.

"It's the way of establishing the mind link, when she finds James then she'll start speaking like a normal person."
