I ran into the house and up to my room. Anything that reminded me of Nick I threw out. The notes and sketches of him thrown. Back in the sixth grade Nick had asked me if I would be his first girlfriend when I was old enough as a joke. Just to play along I said yes. Now that memory was a bad one. Back in the third grade when all of us met, Oscar had given me a best friend drawing. I kept it but I was head-over-heals for Nick at that time. That's when Oscar went to the shadows. Now that Nick was gone he came in and met the sunlight. I was happy he was my partner. Unlike that egg head jerk Nick. I remember back when I was little, Marianna and I didn't give a care in the world about boys. We were just the best of friends. Now in middle school we had feelings. Why? Why do we have to go through the pain? Marianna has never liked a guy and I doubt she will. She doesn't want to give John a chance since she claims he is just a stump in the road. She would never let a stupid guy get into her life. I wish I was like her. After my heart stopped aching, I worked on my HW and called Marianna. She heard the sniffles and heart ache in my voice.
"Vanessa, what's wrong girl?"
"Egg head told me that he was happy Jess was his first girlfriend. They are cold to me now. Nothing can change that."
After I finished the sentence I burst into tears. When I calmed down Marianna said," Vanessa listen up. Girl talk. You don't need a stupid guy like that stupid Nick to get in the way. He is just another stupid obstacle in your way to success. The key is to zone out all the bumps and obstacles out and move on. Think of something that relaxes you. Understand?"
"Yes."
I calmed down and took a rest. I thought of Oscar and how he comforted me today. With this in my head I was back. I'm so lucky to have a friend like Marianna to give me back my spirit. When our talk was over, I hung up, finished my homework, showered, and got ready to go to bed and face the hard day ahead.
