After the moment with death in thought, the three of us went downstairs. Marianna thought that I was calm about the shooting. I acted that way because I didn't want to bring panic. I remembered how I lost my father and I didn't want Mari to think of that. When we arrived at the kitchen my mom asked Marianna to set the table. My mom considered Mari as a daughter. When the table was set, we sat down and ate. I made bacon, eggs, hash browns, and pancakes.
"Yummy," Marianna said with a full mouth.
As we finished up my mom turned the tv on to watch the news. It was 7:00.
(These next quotes are the news reporters on the tv"
"Breaking News. Today there was a shooting in Battery Park. Reporters are on the scene now."
"Thank you Caroline. Earlier today at 4:55 there was a shooting in Battery. There were a few folks here so I've been asking what they saw. One man said he was walking his dog and he heard a loud bang."
"Just like the day dad died," I commented.
"The man told me when he turned around he saw a women lying dead in the street. He called 911 to be safe. A women responded to me asking what she saw. She claimed she was in the playground with her child and she heard a pop."
"Just like you and me mom."
"As the women turned around she hears her child screaming because the child saw a man on the side of the road dead. She ran to her child and grabbed him. They also called 911 in panic. When police arrived on the scene the oldest policemen said seven years ago from today a man was also shot dead. The mans name was Jonathan Cruz. He was with his family and he was shot dead in the street like the women today."
"Mom, sniff, they remembered."
"The policeman said they have been chasing this killer for seven years and he has struck again today. Today the woman and man have been shot dead. The woman's name was Barbara Jansens and the man Joe Lugar."
I turned the tv off. I couldn't bare the pain.
"Mom. Why do these things happen?"
"Honey our world isn't what it use to be. Now there is more violence in our world."
Marianna gave me a hug and I started crying again. This week has just been terrible since the start.
