Chapter 12-Wake Up Call

Ring!!! Ring!!!
I got up suddenly and saw that my phone was ringing. Mari was still asleep. I grabbed my phone to check the caller and saw it was Nick.
"Hello?"
"Hi Vanessa."
"Nick it's 5:00 in the morning on a Sunday. What do you want?"
I was too tired to sit up so I laid down and listened to him talking about the story on the news and to check it out on this website blah blah blah. After I hung up I searched it up. When it popped up I shook Mari until she woke up.
"What is it Vanessa?"
I pointed to the screen and Mari eyes opened with worry.
On the website it said there was a shooting near out school and to stay indoors at all times.
"My parents."
Marianna's parents were at work at this time and she was worried they would get stuck at work it worse: they had been shot.
"It's ok Mari. They'll be safe. You will stay here until this dies down. Marianna stayed upstairs calling and texting her family. I went downstairs to make breakfast.
I set my phone down on the counter. I had be texting my friends asking if they were ok. Before I let my phone go I felt the vibration. The caller was Oscar.
"Vanessa are you ok. I heard about the shooting and I got worried. Is anyone with you?"
"Don't get worried Oscar. Mari is ok. She's calling her parents and I'm safe."
"Okay. Ill see you Tuesday. There's no school Monday because of the shooting. The district wants to be on the safe side. Bye."
"Bye. Oh wait Oscar."
"Yeah."
"I need to ask you something."
"What is it?"
"Will you go to the dance with me?"
"Of course Vanessa."
"Ok thanks. Bye now."
"Bye."
I hung up and went to prepare breakfast. My mom was down there and asked how Marianna was doing.
"She's worried but it will pass."
"When I heard work was off today I asked why and my boss told me there was a shooting down at the district and to stay home. I thought of her parents too since they work in a building near by."
"Mom they'll be safe I assure you."
"Whatever you say V."
We started laughing because mom gave me the nickname V when I drew Vs for Vanessa all over our old apartment walls.
I went upstairs to check on Mari and tell her breakfast was ready. Before I opened the door I heard she was on the phone with her mom.
"Mama estas bien?"
"Si Marianna. Estoy bien. Tambien tu Papa. Quidade con Vanessa y despues de recohemos. Adios de amo."
"Adios mami."
She hung up and got up. I entered the room and said,"Breakfast is ready. Come when you're ready."
I left her in the room so she could change and get ready.
I was acting so calm about the shooting on the outside but on the inside I was a total mess. I was just happy Oscar said yes.
This week has been a total mess.
