Chapter 10-Dump Day

I woke up still thinking about the letters. I couldn't get them off my mind. I got off my bed and got dressed, it was Friday. Next week it was exams and then the week after that the field trip and the end of the year dance. All my friends had a date except for me and Marianna. She rejected John so we decided we would go together. I went downstairs slowly. I ate a banana and waited for Marianna to pick me up. My mom saw my slowness and asked,"Honey what's wrong."
"Mom, Nick has a girlfriend now and it's been hard trying to move on. And then yesterday I noticed an email from him but a year ago. I ignored it. Then in my backpack was a note from Oscar. I've moved on and things are changing mom. Things have changed mom. Maybe for the better. Now I'm connecting with Oscar. I would've never done that unless Nick went out with Jess. That wasn't so bad I guess."
"Oh Vanessa..."
At that moment, Marianna came in to pick me up.
"Bye mom."
"Bye Vanessa. Wait Vanessa."
"Yeah?"
"You have to walk with Marianna today. I'm getting out of work late."
"Ok mom."
Afterwards, Marianna and I set off for day three of moving on.
"You good Vanessa."
"Yeah."
As we were walking down the block, I saw Jessica crying. The strange thing was Nick wasn't with her. Mari walked up to her and said," Jess what's wrong?"
"Nick broke up with me."
My mouth dropped open at this. They only lasted two and a half days. Wow.
"Jess you better not be playing."
"I'm not. When he picked me up to go to school he said he was dumping me. With that he left."
That's when I walked over and asked,"Do you know why he dumped you?"
"He told me he had another girl in mind. That girl is you, Vanessa."
I stepped back at this remark.
Why? Why did he do this?
My feelings just came right back in and started messing with me. Everything had already changed. We couldn't go back.
"Vanessa, let's go," Mari said.
We left Jessica and we rushed to school. We saw Nick and grabbed him by his backpack.
"How could you do that to Jessica?" we both shouted.
"You were getting upset Vanessa. I almost lost you as a friend."
At this I look astonished. Mariana pushed me towards him and she left to meet Jasmine. This was awkward. He finally broke the silence by saying,"Vanessa, I still have feelings for you. I know you read the email. While I was checking my email last night it said someone was reading my delete draft. The only person who came to mind was you."
The only thing that came to mind for me to say was,"Nick I've moved on. The day I was finally going to tell you, I find out you have a girlfriend. I thought you liked me. But not enough to be your happy first. The group has already changed the plans and they're staying that way. You had your chance now it's been taken by some one else."
With this his face told me everything. He lost both the girl and a friend. His choice was pain enough for the both of us and I didn't want that to come back.
"I have to go Nick. See you around."
I left and didn't look back.
Nick shouted after me,"who's that someone else?"
I ignored him and kept walking. He knew very well that some one else was Oscar.
The day went along just fine until after school. Marianna waited for a while since I had to talk to Nick. Then we would leave for her house. After a minute Nick arrived.
"Hey"
I just looked forward and ignored him.
"Vanessa I know I messed up but please can we be friends. I can move on but I still want to keep our friendship."
I looked at him with forgiving eyes and said,"We can be friends and only friends. But you and Jess are still outcasts from the group. You two went behind a loyal friends back and went out. You two are also not invited to the party. Have fun with Jessica as your partner."
With that said, Mari took me by the arm and we started walking. As I walked away I waved good-bye to Nick.
