Maddie's POV:
"He's coming this year Maddie. What am I going to do?" Severus asked me curiously as he paced his classroom. "Just calm down." I said. "How can I calm down!? How are you calm?! Dumbledore has assigned us as Harry's guardian angels." He said still pacing. "Listen. All we have to do it make sure no great harm comes to him and don't give away that we're keeping an eye on him." I said as I stepped in front of him to stop him in his tracks. "You make it sound simple. It's much more complicated than that." He said with furrowed brows. "I know half of the reasons why you're protecting him are obvious to me. You don't have to keep it a secret." I said, which made him stop pacing on his own. "What do you know? I'm surprised you've stayed quiet on this matter since I stepped back into your life, so tell me what you've observed." He asked me curiously. "Well, Dumbledore obviously wants us to keep Harry safe from You Know Who and any of his followers. He also wants us to keep him from any other dangers so when he gets older he can defeat The Dark Lord." I said. "Very good. What else?" He said with a raised eyebrow. "You and Lucius are death eaters; that's why you left Hogwarts. You were a loyal follower until he targeted Lily. You then went to Dumbledore for help, but they were still murdered despite your attempts to keep all of them safe. You were Dumbledore's informant that night when he told us of Lily and James's deaths." I said. "How did you know all of that?" He asked taken aback. "I have my ways." I said raising an eyebrow mysteriously. "Seriously Maddie, how do you know all of this? Tell me, now." He said grabbing my shoulders gently as he stared in my eyes. "Okay, fine. Dumbledore told me. Why can't I be mysterious every once in a while?" I said, which made him smile and relax. "I can't have you upscaling me, can I?" He asked, which made me giggle. He has been making me giggle more and more as the years have went on. He's been smiling more too, which I really loved; his smile is so beautiful. "If it's fair, he told me he made you watch over Harry the summer before we reunited. I don't blame you for wanting to get Harry away from the Dursleys." He said as he stacked some books on a shelf. "You saw how the Dursleys act?" I asked curiously. "He had me watching over him the same time you were." He replied. "Dumbledore is too sneaky and secretive for his own good." I said, which made him laugh. He has been laughing a lot too since he warmed up to me again. "You can say that again." He said. I helped him get things ready for the first day of classes tomorrow. There was a part of me that dreaded Harry's appearance here in the wizard world. Not just because of the heightened dangers, but because I knew Severus wasn't going to like him too well. I saw him, and he looks a lost exactly like his father, James. I hoped Harry's green eyes would ground Severus, because they were identical to Lily's eyes. I suddenly started wondering how Severus and Lily's child would look like if they had gotten married. A boy with longish black hair and green eyes came to mind with Severus's big beautiful nose. It made me smile and made my heart break at the same time. "What are you thinking about?" He asked me curiously. "Oh, nothing." I replied. He looked at me with an unbelieving expression with his eyebrow raised. "My thoughts are none of your business Mr. Nosy." I said tapping his nose gently. "Stop being so cute." He said, which made my heart flutter. I'm sure I was red as a tomato as well, and I wasn't sure how to react. "You stop being so dark and mysterious." I said with a slight hesitation. "You and I both know that's what you love about me." He purred in his silky voice. My hormones were totally betraying me at this moment. I needed to just run to my room and freak out, I needed a female friend I could divulge my emotions to, I...I needed....air! "I...I just forgot Mcgonagall needed to talk to me." I said quickly and hurried out of the room. I heard him chuckle as I left, and I mentally cursed myself. Once I was a good ways away from his classroom I slid down the stone wall and processed what just happened. "Christ!" I said hiding my face in my hands. "Maddie, are you okay?" I heard Mcgonagall's voice ask curiously. The very person I needed to talk to; I knew she wouldn't judge me for how I was feeling about Severus. "Can we go to The Three Broomsticks? I need to tell you....well..ask your advice on something." I said. "Sure." She said with a kind smile on her face. I told her everything that happened a few minutes ago and how I felt when I saw him the day he came back. "Maddie, you know his heart belongs to Lily." She said with sympathy in her eyes. "I know, and that's why I hadn't told him how I've been feeling. I think he just acted that way because he noticed it flustered me." I replied with an ache forming in my chest. "Then why did you ask for my advice?" She asked curiously. "I just needed someone to talk to about it I guess." I replied. "I'll be here for you if you ever need to talk Maddie, remember that." She said sweetly. "Thanks, it means a lot." I replied. "Well, I better get back to the castle." She said as she stood up. "Okay, see ya at dinner." I said. She smiled at me before she left, and as I sat there alone...I couldn't help but fell sad inside. 'You're so stupid Maddie. His heart belongs to Lily; he'll never ever fall in love with you.' I said to myself. "Can I get you another butterbeer miss?" The bartender asked me curiously. "Actually...could you give me a firewhisky." I replied. I never really drank alcohol, but..today was the exception. (Little did Maddie know, Severus was a few tables away sitting in the shadows listening to every word her and Mcgonagall exchanged.) I made it back to the castle just in time for dinner, which surprised me. I didn't drink as much as I thought I would; the alcohol didn't agree with me too well. I didn't vomit or anything, the taste was just revolting. I took my seat next to Severus, and he smiled at me. I smiled back, but it soon faded when the ache in my chest returned. 'Stop it Maddie! Just let him go.' I said to myself as we began eating. We all finished eating, but we were all engaged in talking about the new school year. As always we were all excited to see the new students coming this year. Suddenly I felt something soft brush past my hand, but I ignored it. It happened again, and when I looked down I saw Severus's hand next to mine. He gently wrapped his index finger around my index finger; soon his hand was in mine. His had was so much bigger than mine and surprisingly soft. I blushed and hoped nobody really noticed. "Maddie, did you hear me?" I heard professor Sprout ask curiously. I wondered how long I sat there with everyone staring at me, which made me feel so nervous. "No, what did you say?" I asked. "Are you excited about this year?" She asked with a big smile. "Yeah, even though I know it's going to be way more demanding than previous years." I said. I was thinking about how Severus and I would have the most stressful time this year and other years to come. We had to do are professional work and then secretly keep a watchful eye over Harry for the next seven or eight years. "What makes you say that?" Professor Quirrell asked in his stuttering voice. "I just have a gut feeling. They're usually always right." I replied. I've always felt something was up with Quirrell, but I wasn't sure what. There just wasn't something totally right with the guy, but like I said before..everything will be revealed in a matter of time. We continued eating, and Severus's hand remained in mine for the remainder of dinner. I wondered why he suddenly wanted to hold my hand, but I wasn't complaining. His touch felt amazing, and it just felt...right. After dinner I went to my room and got ready for bed, but I couldn't sleep. This was the first time I hadn't slept well since Sverus came back into my life, and I wondered if it meant that something bad was going to happen. The next morning I woke up and took a nice hot bath before I got ready to go down for breakfast. I heard a pecking at my window, so I walked over to see what it was. There was a black owl sitting on my windowsill holding a letter in its beak. I opened the window and took the letter from the owl, who in turn flew off into the morning fog. I closed my window and opened the letter.
