Maddie's POV:

Severus and I were sitting on the train heading to Hogwarts for Harry's third year. I thought I would be able to get some time to relax over the summer, but I was wrong. Lucius and his wife were always wanting me to go along with them to various dinners. I barely had time with Severus, but I did have a nice time staying with him. I wasn't sure why Lucius wanted me to go with them places and not invite Severus, but I guess he knew Severus wouldn't have came anyway. I used my wand and summoned myself a cup of coffee; I didn't sleep to good last night. Severus was out late and I hadn't went to sleep until he came back, but this time I had a dream. It wasn't like my previous nightmares, which I was thankful for. It was just me and some other people I didn't know sitting at a table talking to each other. Severus was there as well, but he hated half the people there. "Are you alright?" Severus asked curiously. He rubbed my back gently with a sympathetic look on his face. "I'm just really tired, but I can't take a nap because my mind keeps spinning with thoughts." I said rubbing my bloodshot eyes. "Go take a walk to clear your head." He said sweetly. "Okay. I'll see you in a little while then." I said as I slowly stood and opened the compartment door. This year he and I didn't get to go to Hogwarts early, so we were literally riding the train with the students. I started thinking about Harry and his friends. I hated that they didn't trust Severus, but at least they didn't know his true agenda. They seemed to trust me a little, mostly because I secretly helped them with a tough essay Severus assigned them. 'Things are getting darker now, and they're only going to get worse.' I thought. Last year Harry destroyed Tom Riddle's diary...well..Voldemort's diary in the chamber of secrets. I had a bad feeling about the fact the destruction of the diary killed the memory of the teenage Voldemort. I remember reading something in a book about the dark arts about putting parts of your soul in an object to achieve immortality. I wasn't sure if Dumbledore and Severus seen this yet or not, but I figured they had. Especially since Severus was once a loyal follower of Voldemort. I sighed as I walked closer to the front of the train with my mind still filtering through my thoughts. Suddenly the train stoped and the lights went out. I got that feeling in the pit of my stomach that lets me know if something bad was about to happen. I stood still as a black figure I knew to be a dementor open on of the compartments. After a few moments a bright flash of light erupted from the compartment and the dementor vanished. I hurried back to where Severus was looking up and down the hall. "What's going on?" He asked curiously. I pushed him back into the compartment and closed the door as the lights came back on. "A dementor just came on the train. Somebody got rid of it, but I don't know who." I said as I sat down. "It was probably looking for Sirius Black." He sneered as he thrust the paper into my hands. I looked at the front page and read about the prison break from Azkaban. "I didn't know he was sent to Azkaban." I said. "Yeah, that filthy flea bag betrayed Lily and James to the Dark Lord." He said with fiery anger in his dark eyes. "Wait...why would he rat them out if he was best friends with Lily and James?" I asked curiously. "Because he's an arrogant insolent jerk." He said. "I think your blinded by anger." I said quietly, but he heard me anyway. "Why are you defending him?! He picked on both of us and he never showed an ounce of remorse for it." He said, mad at me now. "I'm not defending him Severus. I'm just saying there might be more to this than meets the eye, like basically everything has been these past few years." I said tossing the paper aside as we began moving again. "Fine, I'll give you that...but it doesn't mean I agree with you completely." He said. "I knew you wouldn't, but it's fine." I said kindly. He smirks and pulls out a book and starts reading as we wait until we get to Hogwarts. Once the train stopped we all gathered are belongings and headed to are rooms quickly before we went to the great hall. "Why weren't you and Severus here yesterday?" Mcgonagall asked me curiously. "We had to do some stuff for Dumbledore." I said, which wasn't a lie. He actually told us not to come until today. "Oh, I see." She replied. After a while the older students filled the room while Mcgonagall went down to bring the first years in. "Hello, you must be Maddie Rivers." A tall lanky man with a mustache said as he sat next to me. "Lupin, I heard you got the Defence Against the Dark Arts position." Severus said with a slight sneer. "As a matter of fact I have. It's nice to see you both again. I'm very sorry for the bullying you two received from James and Sirius; I realized that I should have done something to prevent it." He said kindly. "Thanks, but that defeats the purpose now doesn't it." Severus said in an annoyed tone. "I know, but it's never too late to apologize." Lupin said. "It's fine Remus, I forgive you. Besides, you weren't really causing us any pain." I said as he and I shook hands. "Maddie, what has gotten into you?" Severus asked, more shocked than he was on the train. "Listen, all three of us know that You Know Who can come back at any moment. It's best to forgive an old neutral friend of your enemies rather than push them away. We need as many people on are side as we can get." I said. "She's right Snape." Lupin said kindly. "Very well, but that doesn't mean I have to be nice to you Lupin." Severus said crossing his arms. "It's quite alright Severus, I didn't expect you to be kind to me." Lupin replied. I patted Lupin's shoulder sympathetically as Dumbledore began his pre dinner speech. Once he was finished we all started eating and Lupin filled me in on what he had been doing since he left Hogwarts. After a while we went to are rooms and I started unpacking. 'Was Remus the one who sent me that letter a while ago?' I asked myself. It could very will have been him who sent it. I knew I'd have to ask him about it tomorrow. I got ready for bed since Dumbledore said I could sleep on my own this year. I still felt uneasy about the whole thing, but maybe he knew more than I thought. I climbed into bed and hoped my dreams wasn't as bad as they use to be.
