"Okay," Carter instructed, "put your middle finger on the top string on the third fret. Index finger one string down and one fret back. Then put your ring and pinky fingers on the two bottom strings on the third fret. Yes, like that. Now strum." I gripped the guitar pick and slid it across the strings. I was delighted by a disgusting and deadened sound. "Press as hard as you can, but don't touch any other strings when you do." Carter just looked at me, his eyes glistening with happiness. Music really did make him tick. I followed his instructions and then strummed again. It was better, but not as good as what he'd played for me before.
"Better," Carter encouraged. I gave the guitar back to him.
"Don't lie to me. I'm awful."
"No one gets it on the first try." He shoved the guitar back at me, bridging the gap between us. I was on his bed and he'd pulled up a chair to be in front of me.
"My fingers hurt," I said attempting to push it back to him, but he was too strong and kept it in the same place.
"I told you they would. You still wanted to learn."
"I know." I sighed and let Carter slide the strap around me.
"Play what I told you to." I repositioned my fingers, pressed as hard as I could, and strummed. It sounded almost okay.
"See? I told you that you could do it!" Carter kissed me quickly. He was so eager for me to learn. "Okay, now put your middle finger on the bottom string in the second fret. Now your index finger on the third string up. Now your middle finger on the string in between in the third fret. Good, now strum all but the top string." I did as he said and it didn't sound too bad.
"I'm done. My fingers hurt too much." I took the guitar strap off my shoulder and gave the guitar to Carter. He looked a little disappointed, but he was happy that I'd learned two chords. He got up and set it against the wall.
"You'll get used to it and get calluses." He sat down on the bed next to me.
"Maybe guitar isn't for me," I said. I looked at Carter's face and it was a very animated face. He looked like he'd been shot.
"Guitar is amazing. It's just really hard when you first start. I promise it'll get better." I laughed as I realized something that was the same way. "What?"
"Like our relationship!" He laughed with me and nodded.
"Yes, like our relationship." I was surprised when his lips ended up on mine. His arms coiled around my midsection. His lips just fit mine perfectly. The heat intensified between us like sun's rays through a magnifying glass. His mouth traveled to my neck, leaving little kisses behind.
"Carter?" I asked.
"Mhmmm?" he replied kissing my shoulder.
"We shouldn't do this..." I said getting up and walking near the wall.
"Why not? Why not give into something that every bone in your body says it's right to give into?"
"Because..." I really didn't have anything good to say to that.
"Because why?" he knew I didn't have anything good to say. He got off of the bed and slowly walked toward me. "Exactly," he said. He came at me quickly and captured me in his arms. He kissed me roughly and backed me up against the wall. He ran his tongue along my bottom lip. I opened up and let him in. His hands glided down my sides and picked me up so my legs were around his waist.
I ran my fingers through his hair then around his shoulders, eager to know all of him. He just knew how to set my whole world on fire.
His arms held me close by applying pressure with his hands on my lower back. I snaked my arms completely around his neck and hugged him closer. A breath away was a breath too far.
