I stood, leaned against a pillar outside the hotel. Kenny had left to meet Justin, leaving me alone. I'd been waiting for a good fifteen minutes before a black van pulled up directly in front of me. The driver didn't step out or even roll down the window, so I figured this must be my ride. I stepped in and the driver glanced at me. His expression told me that he was well aware of the situation. He turned his attention back to the busy road and I shoved my earphone in my ears to block out the rest of the world. Moments later, my phone vibrated in my pocket. As expected, it was Justin. I rolled my eyes and opened it just to see what it was he had to say. It was a simple, one word text. “Congratulations”. A scoff escaped my throat and I glanced up to make brief eye contact with the driver.
As I settled into my seat, I watched the people pass by from the window. I noticed a slight knot in my stomach. The feeling of fear of losing everything I'd fought to get back and also the determination to prove that I wouldn't. I just couldn't help but remind myself of why I was doing this. This was more than Justin and Selena. This was for me, though the circumstances had much to do with those two. I've wanted this my entire life. At this moment, I was starting to feel scared. I wanted Justin, but thinking this made the knot grow larger as anger was added to the toxic mixture of emotions. The only thing that made me want him right now was that I knew that he knew the feeling. Could talk me through it. But I wasn't willing to show weakness.
The drive seemed short, but my perception of time was warped by the momentum of my life in general. I was escorted into the back of an unmarked building. Inside it smelled of expensive hairspray. A tall, lean woman approached me with a smile.
“You must be Aiden,” she said in a high pitched voice and I nodded.
“Come with me, we'll get you taken care of.”
She led me to a chair and began running her fingers through my stringy, unkempt hair.
“So, what are we looking for today?” She asked, making eye contact with me in the mirror.
“Not sure. I wasn't given any restrictions. I've always wanted really long hair so I guess some extensions would be cool and maybe...” I paused to look in the mirror at my dark hair. I wanted to go for shock value. “Blonde. I want to go platinum blonde...with black low-lights”
The stylist looked at me for a long moment, “Are you positive?”
“Yep. Just do it.”
She left to go and mix the bleach and I stared at myself in the mirror. I wanted to completely change my look. I also knew that going from dark brown hair to platinum blonde would really shock Justin. Make him turn his head. This thought made me smile.
The stylist got busy with my hair while I sat, settling into my seat for the long process. It took an hour for my hair to lighten and then forty minutes for her to put the long extensions into my hair. Then came the long moments that followed where she waxed and plucked my eyebrows. The driver who brought me here whispered something into the stylist's ear and she quickly hurried me to a different chair where she did my makeup. Dark eyes and paled out lips. I personally thought it went well with the way I felt at the moment. Half dead.
“You're all done!” She said after putting the final touches. I nodded and stood up to follow the driver back to the van as he seemed nervous about the time. I hurried into the back seat and was taken down the street to another unmarked building. When I was ushered in I was immediately grabbed by a tall, thin woman who pulled me to a small room full of clothes. She pulled a bight colored dress from the rack and my mouth twisted in disgust, “No.”
I stepped forward, grabbing a cut off, white T-shirt and a half black, half white leather jacket with spikes on the collar. The stylist looked at me inquisitively.
“I wasn't given restrictions. I'm making my own image, and that dress is not it,” I explained as I grabbed a tight pair of black skinny jeans. She nodded and took a step back as I slipped into these new clothes.
Just after I finished tying the laces to the Litas I'd picked out, an obviously gay middle aged man's voice came through the door. “They're waiting for you. We're running out of time.”
I jumped to my feet and took a deep breath, reminding myself why I was here. Justin was here somewhere and I knew it. He probably brought Selena. Just the thought of that fueled he fire inside of me and I immediately put my game face on and left the dressing room. The middle aged man was shocked when he saw me and I'd guessed it was either because he recognized me from previous tabloids from the last time I got involved with Justin or he just wasn't expecting someone like me. However, he quickly came out of his daze and directed me towards a room filled with lights and people running around busily.
The first thing that came to my attention was the Selena was sitting in a raised chair behind the photographer, watching me as I stepped onto the all white background. The photographer immediately clapped his hand once, smiling, and then spoke in a heavy French accent. “ Oh, and here she is. The Aiden Dakota. It's so nice to finally meet you in person. Justin will be joining us shortly.” I nodded and a lady approached me, asking me if I would like some water. I declined, too nervous to oblige. I didn't seem very anxious on the outside, but on the inside I wanted to scream. Then, Justin came out and had the usual effect on me when I was scared or nervous. I was calmed. He saw my harsh expression soften and he smiled. I didn't want him to think that he was off the hook just yet, but I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt if it meant I could get through this without choking. Selena watched closely as he came to me and I hugged him. He held me tightly as he spoke.
“Are you okay?”
I nodded, “Mhm.”
He chuckled. “Are you scared?”
I sighed, “maybe a little.”
“It's going to be fine. Just take a few deep breaths and fake it,” He said and then let me go.
The photographer stepped forward. “What a beautiful couple.”
“We're not--” I attempted but was quickly hushed as he waved his hand at me.
“Let's get this show on the road.”
I felt like a dog, being commanded to stand this way and that and put my hands on Justin's shoulder, to make different facial expressions. I noticed the Selena was still watching me very closely and my inner devil grinned as I spontaneously wrapped my arm around Justin, then gave him a seemingly playful kiss on the cheek. Justin seemed to be completely oblivious to my intentions as he laughed. I continued to be subtly sexual towards Justin, him unknowingly playing along, until the photographer stopped us, praising us for a job well done and then dismissed us.
I saw the fire in Selena's eyes as I walked past her, leaving Justin behind me to put my own clothes back on in order to leave on my way to this recording studio of Scooter's. I knew exactly what I had done and I was damn proud.
