Just for a reference, how many of you would actually follow my tumblr if I posted on it regularly? As of right now, I don't. Why? Because I'm not sure if it's worth it. Why make posts if nobody sees them?
I woke up in silence. I woke up alone. At first it seemed only normal, but then I remembered the night before. I sat up quickly and looked around. I was completely by myself. The television was off and there was only a soft blue light illuminating the doorway from the windows. Suddenly, the worst thoughts rushed through my mind and my heart began to suffocate itself. I found myself out of the bed and out the, now unlocked, rec room door. My bare feet splashed through the melting snow as I rushed through the back door to the house.
Once in the house, the sound being given off from the pellet stove as it hummed in the other room was all I could hear for a long moment. Then I heard the sound of dishes clashing together and I rushed around the corner. My face regained color and the sick feeling went away when I saw Justin, sitting at the table, with Rosie and Autumn. They were eating breakfast cereal quietly, Justin smiling wide at Autumn as she stared at him with her big doe eyes. I leaned against the door pane, watching in silence with a slight smile.
It took a few minutes for someone to notice my presence. Rosie looked over at me and gave me her signature “I-told-you-so” look. Justin turned his attention to me and we made eye contact. Autumn jumped out of her chair and ran to me, her arms out wide. I leaned down to pick her up. She leaped into my arms and I lifted her up, resting her bottom on my hip and carried her back towards the table.
“So when did you decide to unlock the door?” I asked Rosie.
“When I got up this morning, around 10,” she answered, shrugging.
“You’re so mean,” I glared.
“But was I right, or was I right?” She laughed defiantly.
“Oh shut up, Rose,” I said.
“Right about what? “ Justin chimed in.
“Nothing,” I answered, still glaring at Rosie.
“Alright then…” he said.
“She’s mad because I was right that she just needed to talk to you to make things better,” she said and I slapped her arm.
“Oh, I see,” He smiled.
Justin looked down at his, now empty, cereal bowl. I set Autumn down to go play with the dog, a toy Chihuahua named Yoda. Rosie stood up and collected the empty cereal bowls, taking them to the sink. I sat down, combing my ratted hair with my fingers.
“I’ll be right back,” he said and walked quietly out the front door.
Generally unconcerned about what he was doing, I rested my head on my hand and watched him walk out the front gate through the big window in the dining room.
“So, what happened?” Rosie asked from the sink where she was washing dishes.
“What do you mean?” I asked, cocking my eyebrow.
“You know what I mean. So did you two make up?” she asked.
“I guess so. I don’t think I’ve fully forgiven him for it all, but we’re on speaking terms,” I explained.
“Well that’s better than nothing,” she shrugged.
“Yeah, I know, but I don’t think I’ll ever truly forgive him. It’s just one of those permanent scars,” I sighed.
“I understand,” she spoke.
“I hate to ask you, but can I have a cigarette from you? I don’t have any with me right now,” I said to her.
She rolled her eyes at me and nudged her head in the direction of the chair she had been sitting in at the table. On it was her jacket, draped over the back of it. I dug into the pocket and pulled out her box of Marlboro Reds and her lighter.
“Thanks,” I said, standing up and walking out the front door, standing on the front porch.
I started to walk towards the porch swing when I overheard Justin speaking. I looked over at the front gate, but didn’t see him.
“I know, babe, but I had to,” I heard him say and my organs twisted inside me. I knew exactly who he was talking to. Selena.
“I didn’t want to keep it from you, but I had a feeling you would act like this…………I understand that but-……will you just listen to me for a second?” I heard him argue, “Look, Sel, I came to see Aiden because I missed her and I wanted to see her. I felt bad for leaving her like that and you know this. I don’t know why you’re so over dramatic about it. It’s not that big of a deal.”
It was quiet for a couple minutes and then I heard, “Alright. I’ll see you soon. Love you too. Bye.”
Quietly I took my seat on the porch swing, inhaling from my cigarette as I swung back and forth. Justin seemed frustrated as he came through the gate again, looking down at the ground. He didn’t even notice I was there until he heard the creaking of the swing as it moved. His head shot up and he made eye contact with me, sitting sideways with my back against the arm rest of the swing with my knees pulled up to my chest as I took another drag.
“How long have you been outside?” he asked.
“Maybe five minutes. But the real question you wanted to ask is if I heard you on the phone. The answer to that is yes,” I answered, smoke exiting through my lips as I spoke.
“Oh. Well, yeah, I just was thinking about last night and how you brought up that I lied to Selena and I wanted to fix that, so I called her,” he said.
“And her reaction?” I pushed on, flicking the ashes off the end of my cigarette.
“Expected. She was furious that I lied to her. She wants me to come see her,” he said.
“So, you’re going to be leaving soon then,” I concluded out loud, again taking another drag.
“Yeah,” he nodded.
“Alright,” I said, putting my act of apathy on once again, “good.”
His face seemed shocked for a minute and then he nodded again.
“I mean, that was the deal we made last night. That you would leave,” I reminded him, not meaning it.
“Yeah…”
“So I guess this is it,” I said, putting out my cigarette and standing up, “thanks for being there. Oh wait.”
My resentment for him returned as I opened the screen door and entered, slamming it behind me, and shutting the large oak door behind it and locking it. Returning to the kitchen, I retook my spot and watched through the window again as he walked, now with less bounce in his step, out the front gate.
“Where’s he going?” Rosie asked.
“far away from here,” I answered.
