I was beginning to get tired as the alarm clock in the rec room’s bedroom flashed “12:00 am”. I layed on the outside of the bed, watching the television as it flashed it’s pictures at me. Justin was behind me, not speaking but not sleeping. He was staring up at the wood paneled ceiling. We had been laying like this for almost an hour and a half. It was beginning to get a little too quiet so I turned over to look at him. He didn’t turn his head or even flinch.
“So,” I said, attempting to break the awkward silence.
“Hm?” He said.
“How long have you and Selena been together?” I asked, merely trying to make civil conversation.
“Since shortly after the fire,” he said with his voice a little shaky. As though he had wanted to stop himself in midsentence.
Though it stung a little that it seemed he had moved on so quickly after such an experience, I ignored my scorned thoughts, “Does she make you happy?”
“Well, yeah,” he answered, “she makes me really happy, but I don’t think she understands why I feel the way I do about you and I.”
I nodded, listening intently.
“She just doesn’t get why I’m so stuck in that moment,” he said quietly.
“In what moment?” I asked,
“That moment when I came busting out of that house, carrying you and falling into the grass. The moment when I let that nagging thought that you might not make it cross my mind and I had a mental breakdown,” he said.
I understood what he meant and nodded again, inviting him to continue.
“She told me that she thought I was being silly because I was having problems eating, I had no appetite. She didn’t comprehend exactly what I meant when I told her that breathing was a chore for me. I love her, but she doesn’t get me. Not like…” he went on, but paused.
“Not like?” I asked.
“Not like you do,” he admitted, “you understand me. Not just…hear the words I’m saying. You always saw me for what I am, a teenage boy. With her, I can’t be that because she’s an actress and a singer so it’s double the paparazzi and double the rumors.”
“Did you ever think that maybe she might be jealous of the connection we had before?” I asked.
“No. I never did because she doesn’t seem the jealous type,” he said.
“Justin, everyone is the jealous type. There will always be something that someone else has that you want. Whether it be wealth, accessories, talents, or even relationships. I’m sure there are many girl and boys who are jealous of yours and Selena’s relationship,” I said.
“Maybe you’re right. Maybe she is jealous, but I still don’t see how that would make her seem so angry over my depression.”
I stared for a second and yawned, “Well,” I started, blinking the sleep out of my eyes, “That might be something that you have to ask her about. Though, you may or may not like the answer.”
“I know. I just don’t know how to go about it…especially now,” he said.
“What? Now that you’ve come back?” I asked.
“Yeah. She doesn’t know that I’m here. I told her that I was staying in Vegas for the night,” he said.
“There’s one sign that she might not be worth it. You felt the need to lie about where you are because you thought she might keep you from coming or might get mad that you did. If you asked me, I would say that’s a little unfair,” I replied.
“That’s true, but that doesn’t change the way I feel about her, A.”
“That’s alright. Though, for now, just let me pretend that she’s not in the picture and that I just might be able to keep you forever,” I said with a slight giggle.
He smiled and chuckled softly but said nothing. He only yawned and closed his eyes.
I rested my head on his shoulder, wrapping myself in the blanket. Again it was quiet and the soft automated laughter from the sitcom that played on the television set a calming mood for the small room. The last thing I remember before falling asleep was the smell of Justin’s deodorant and how content it made me feel.
