'Hideyoshi Nagachika. You are my sunshine. You are my light to guide me out of the dark. You are my best friend. You are my brother. You were the only person that accepted me, as a human and ghoul. And what did I do? I killed you. I ate you. I hate myself.'
It was all Kaneki could think the next day as he walked out of that hospital.
Hide followed him out, smiling and laughing like he always use to, when he was alive.
'How could you forgive me? How could you say that it wasn't my fault? How could you say such lies when you were the victim of my sins? How could you still hug me? Touch me? After all I've done. I've killed, I've cannibalized, I've done horrible things. Yet, you still talk to me, look at me, laugh with me, like I'm the old Kaneki. But I'm not.'
"I like Melinda and Jim! Let's visit Melinda today at her antique shop!" Hide suggested, squeezing Kaneki from behind. He didn't pick him up like he used to since it would look weird to the surrounding people.
'I'm not human anymore, Hide. I'm not even a ghoul. I'm a ghoul, but I'm not. I'm a human, but I'm not. What do you call that? A freak?'
"-ki!"
'An abomination?'
"-neki!"
'The impossible?'
"-aneki!"
'Am I nothing?'
"Kaneki!"
'Do I not exist for I am neither ghoul nor human?'

Kaneki was thrown from his thoughts as Hide stood inches from his face, eyes wide with worry.
"You okay, man? I thought you somehow lost the ability to hear me or something." Hide chuckled, but worry and concern was evident in his tone.
"I'm okay. Just...thinking." Kaneki replied.
"About what?" Hide asked, suspiciously.
"Life." Kaneki answered.
"Kaneki." Hide sighed. "That's cryptic talk for 'I'm angsting about how I'm a monster and I am nothing. I'm a freak and I don't understand why you're still comfortable around me.'"
Kaneki shrugged. "Yet, it's all true."
"I don't give a crap how many people are around us, I will slap you." Hide threatened.
