Happy Birthday to my baby sister, Karter!

Kaneki was the first to take action.

He was gone in a swift leap, in the trees by now, they were sure.

The investigators turned tense, but they didn't have time to do anything.

Kaneki was already behind them, mask intact to his face this time, and kakugan gleaming.

His kagune swung lazily behind him, but they were ready for anything.

He was gone in the blink of an eye again, reappearing in front of Ned, Lily, and Hide.

He got into a battle stance quickly, ready for the CCG's first move, but unable to willingly make the first move himself.

He tried his best to shield the three humans behind him, kagune spreading outwards to block their bodies.

The CCG members noticed this.

Amon felt guilt twitch in his gut, as he realized the young half ghoul was trying to protect those dear to him, from them no less!

It would make sense, since the ghoul probably didn't feel secure in the fact that the CCG might take them in.

Though they were humans, Kaneki had every right to fear that the CCG might ridicule the three for even thinking about being friends with the ghoul.

Amon also felt guilty for not realizing what these humans meant to the ghoul earlier.

It was obvious he never once thought them to be food, only friends and family he needed to protect.

Whether this ghoul was once human or not, it didn't change the fact that he was now, indeed, a ghoul, and he showed more emotion than Mado ever had when Amon was partners with him.

It wasn't anger, at least Amon hoped it wasn't, or bloodlust either. The ghoul, Kaneki, felt the need to protect, and that was that.

Arima watched how the ghoul moved, quickly and swiftly hiding his face the moment his partners and he came into view.

Once that was done, the ghoul had immediately moved to block his friends.

What intrigued Arima was the fact that Kaneki didn't try to attack. Sure, he was ready to, but he was only waiting for them to make the first move.

Kaneki didn't want to fight, probably didn't want to ever see them again. He wanted to avoid conflict, but he was ready to do what was needed if he or the other two Doves made a move to injure the kakuja himself or the humans he was blocking from harm.

Though the people he was protecting were humans, there was no doubt that that didn't matter to the one-eyed ghoul. They were what they were to him, and that was his friends, his family. It didn't matter whether or not that Kaneki was supposed to make their species his food.
