God, the feeling was killing him. He despised the fact that he'd pushed it off for so long.
It might have been the fact that Hide was gone. It might have been the fact that he'd been feeling lost without his best friend. It might have even been the feeling that eating anyone else would be betraying the forgiveness Hide had shown towards the ghoul.
Kaneki didn't know, exactly.
It didn't change the fact that he was hungry, though.
A sound, a breath, a scent.
The scent was familiar, but not in a comforting way.
It was Amon, and Kaneki knew the reason he was here.
Kaneki let a small slip into his face, but Amon wouldn't see it. His back faced the investigator.
Kaneki briefly wondered why a quinque wasn't through his chest yet.

He was met with a blinding white.
Slowly, the white glowed a golden hue, and black crept its way around his vision.
When black was the only thing that consumed his sight, there was a flash, and he opened his eyes.
He began to sit up, realizing he was lying down, but a wooden roof stopped him.
He slowly tried to gain his vision back, but it was still darkness.
His hands crept their way to his pockets to feel a lump.
He pulled the object out and realized it was a flashlight.
What was that doing there? He hadn't had it before.
He took a breath and released, before he gasped.
Slowly, his hand crept to where his heart lay under the skin.
He could feel his beating heart, the way it pulsed beneath his hand.
He was alive.
How? He'd moved on.
Hide flicked on the flashlight and examined his surroundings.
It wasn't much, he realized, when he saw that he was in a casket.
It seemed that he'd been brought back to life, crazily enough.
How it was done was a mystery, and why.
The question of how his body hadn't rotted yet was also a mystery, but the world did work in mysterious ways.
