It's been 6 years. 6 years of love, arguments, and fighting over the TV remote. 6 years of tours, new jobs, and new hair colors. 6 years of distance, happiness, and infatuation.
"Bye Macey," she waved to the brunette behind the front desk as she headed to the door. "See you next week, have a safe trip."
Macey, who was Mae's receptionist at the strip club, smiled and waved back and she was out of the building. Yes, Mae ran her own strip club. Her heels clicked on the sidewalk and her head was held high. She received a few looks as she jogged across the street to the parking garage. She slowed down, smoothing down her skirt and hopped in an elevator. There was a little girl, maybe around 5 or 6 years old, standing next to her mother in the elevator. Mae smiled kindly at them, releasing her plum colored hair so it draped over her shoulders. She slipped her heels off, and quickly replaced them with her Converse. Mae huffed, blowing hair out of her face as the door opened for her level.
She made her way up the ramp, digging in her purse for her car keys and cell phone. She settled in her car just in time for her mom to call her.
"Hey mom," Mae said when she clicked the green button on her steering wheel.
"Hi baby!" She exclaimed and Mae smiled. She moved out 5 years ago and she swore her mother has called her nearly every day since. Mae didn't move too far, about 2 hours away, in an apartment.
"What's up?" Mae asked, pulling out of the parking garage and made her way back to her apartment.
"Just calling to say hi to my favorite daughter."
"I'm your only daughter."
"You don't know my life."
Mae rolled her eyes. "Are you suggesting you have more children?"
Silence.
"That's what I thought," Mae snorted, slightly shaking her head.
"Shut up," her mom mumbled and Mae rolled her eyes again.
"Love you too!"
Her mom laughed. "I miss you. Please come visit me soon."
"I miss you too. I will, I'll bring Michael too. And Millie and Lucy."
She heard her mom clap. "When does Mikey come back again?"
"Next week," Mae smiled, pulling up to her apartment complex. She was excited to see Michael again. "I'm home, I'll call you later."
"Love you," her mom mused.
"Love you too."
Mae stood in the empty elevator, smiling like an idiot at the thought of seeing Michael next week. She hadn't seen him in nearly 6 months, which is the longest they'd gone without seeing each other. The boys were on their 5th tour, working their asses off and she missed them.
The elevator door opened and Mae stepped out, her feet dragging on the carpeted floor of the hallway. She heard a faint screaming noise coming from somewhere and her senses quickly rose. She picked up her pace, and as the screams got louder she started running to her apartment door. When she reached her door she crashed into it, fumbling to shove her keys into the key hole as she listened to the blood curling screams coming from the other side. She finally got it unlocked and flung the door open.
The screaming got twice as loud and Mae was in full panic mode. Throwing her purse on the ground, she ran to the source of the loudness, which came from a bedroom.
"Amelia?!" She shouted, rounding the corner.
But what Mae found was not the sight she was expecting, oh no. Mae thought she'd find someone dead on the floor, a bloody massacre if you will, but instead she found her 26 year old fiancé lying on the floor screaming, along with their 2 year old daughter – who was in tears, flailing her small body everywhere whilst screaming "mommy mommy!"
