Avery Jordan
I limped out of bed. My body still aching a little from the injuries Brice gave me. Sometimes I wonder, if his other females can do better than me, why won't he just let me leave?
That's not gonna happen. I've been in this relationship for 4 years. There's no need in leaving now. He's a well known drug Lord. He could get any one of his boys to kill me if I stepped one foot out the door without him knowing.
I walked into the bathroom & grabbed my makeup. I already know how my face looks. I know just how much & how much makeup not to put on my face. Bruises are covering my body so much now, you'd think they were birth marks.
I took a long, hot shower and washed my hair. I fantasized about how my life would've been without Brice. I fantasized about how my life would've been with my child. I didn't even know if it was a boy or a girl. I just know it was mine.
It was 6:38 by the time I dried off, applied my makeup, & got dressed. I walked over to a sleeping Brice.
"Papi, I'm leaving for work."
"You better be in this house by 4:45. Bring me some food when you get off."
"Yes, papi."
I work at a nursing home called, "Comfortable Living." I've been there for almost two years. The pay is great and the people there are wonderful. Some are so wise. I wonder why their family members put them in these homes. Some things just doesn't make sense.
I had to be at work at 7:40. It took me an hour and some minutes to get there, that's if the traffic isn't slow.
I was listening to the radio when my phone vibrated. I saw it was my coworker/ best friend, Jerrion.
"You think you got time to stop by and pick up a mini breakfast for me? Yes? Thank you! I love you!" -JerBear .
"This girl is something else." I laughed as I pulled into Starbucks' drive thru & got both of us some breakfast.
--"Girl. Where in the world have you been?! You were almost late."
I smiled when I heard Jerr's voice behind me. She only had to say one word, and my mood would automatically brighten.
"JerBear, it's 7:22. I have to be here at 7:40. Tell me please how I was almost late." I said while clocking in.
"Mmhmm. Well you need to go check on Mr. Jameson. He's been asking about you all morning."
Mr. Jameson is a 73 year old man, but his mind is 24, if you know what I mean.
"Ha! Mr. Jameson is your patient. He is too touchy-feely for me," I said to Jerr while we walked to the front.
"Yadda yadda. He isn't that bad. But if he keeps on, his old ass gonna catch these hands. Let him keep playing with me if he wants to. Me & Mr. Jameson are gonna get to Mr. Jacking. And Ima be Mrs. WhoopingThatAss."
I just looked at her. I swear I can't take her serious.
"Take a nap, Jerr."
I laughed with her.
"But anyway, you still with that brown bastard?"
I didn't say anything. I knew this conversation was coming up again. She hated my relationship with papi. She doesn't know about him beating me. The fact that he's a drug lord is enough for her not to like him. Imagine how she'd react if she found out about the beatings. She thinks that the "papi" and "daddy" words are just me being sprung. If only she knew.
I let out a breath and put my head down. "Jerr. This isn't a conversation I feel like having with you today."
"But Ave--"
"Go to work. Go. Shoo."
I turned around and walked off. I heard her sigh loudly and stomp off in the other direction. I swear she's so dramatic.
I went into Mrs. AvEol's room. A really sweet, 74 year old woman with a slight accent. She kinda reminds me of my mom a little. Basically the only difference is she's older and still living.
"Good morning, Mrs. AvEol."
She turned her head slowly to me and allowed a smile to spread across her gorgeous, aging face.
"Good mornin', sweetheart. How are you feelin'?" her voice asked with a tremble.
I kept my smile on my face. "I'm great, Mrs. A. Never better."
One of her eyebrows lightly rose. Something she always did when she knew someone wasn't telling the truth.
"You wouldn't lie ta me, would ya?"
I lowered my head a little and turned to open her curtains to let some sun in.
"Are you hungry? Have you eaten breakfast yet?"
She was quiet for a second before she answered. "I could eat."
I smiled a little. Happy she was willing to change the conversation.
Lord, let this day go fast.
