Avery Jordan

I woke up the next morning with a terrible headache. My face was throbbing and aching.

I slipped out of bed and went into the bathroom. Staring into the mirror, events from last night started to play in my head.

Hitting.
Yelling.
Hitting.
Yelling.
Engagement.
Kissi--

Wait. What? Engagement? I said yes? Duhh, Avery. Of course I said yes. I looked at the ring on my finger. It was perfect. Not too big, but definitely not small. For a drug lord, he has good taste in jewelry.

He genuinely knows how to make me happy sometimes. He isn't that bad.

I hurriedly took a shower and applied a little makeup. Some of the bruises and swellings couldn't be covered. Jer is gonna beat my ass today, then Brice's.

It was coming on 6:30 a.m. so I sent Brice a text since he still wasn't back from "handling business."

To: Papi
"On my way to work, papi."

I didn't wait for a response. Knowing him, he probably read it, then put his phone on "Do Not Disturb."
--

As soon as I got to work, I went to the back to grab my scrubs and clock in. I took my curly, brown hair out of it's ponytail, hoping it would cover most of the bruises and swellings.

I heard someone come into the room. Out of my natural reaction, I turned to see who it was.

"Dang, Jer!"

She was literally right in my face, literally.

She didn't say anything, just looked at me for a second.

"What the fuck happened to your face?"

She asked. Not breaking eye contact for even one second.

I put my hands inside my scrub pockets so she wouldn't see the ring on my finger.

"I tripped over one of Brice's shoes this morning on the way to the bathroom."

Would I even believe that lie myself?

"Jerrion! You're needed in the back!" Another one of our co-workers called out.

Thank God.

She didn't move an inch or look away. She stayed right where she was and Her eyes stayed right on me.

We stayed there for about 2 minutes before she finally spoke.

"I know when you're lying, Josephine. We're not done."

Now I was really in trouble. She never called me by my middle name unless she was genuinely pissed off.

She walked away, leaving me to gather my thoughts before going to check on Mrs. AvEol. I didn't have to check on her until about 12 in the afternoon today, which is just enough time for me to get myself together and hopefully think of another lie.
--

After I finished with my other patients, it was time to tend to Mrs. AvEol. She was laying down watching Judge Judy.

I couldn't stand that Judge.

"I see you're watching your favorite t.v. show." I laughed.

She smiled her million dollar smile. "You got dat right, honey. Good afta'noon." She said while raising upward to get ready for her pills.

"Good afternoon."

Before I could say anything else, there was a knock on the door.

"Come in." I said.
