Brice Knitington
I told her to be here at 4:45. It's almost 5:30. I don't like hitting her, but I swear sometimes it's like she asks for it.
With the business I run, no one will disrespect me, not even my own bitch. But I love her, and I can't live without her.
I was in the bathroom getting ready to make a run and check on things when I heard the door downstairs open and shut.
I checked my phone, "5:45." Why the fuck was she late?
Avery Jordan
I finally pulled up to the house. "5:45." Damn.
I went into the house and walked up the stairs. I'm already an hour late, no need to rush.
I walked into the bedroom and saw that the light was on in the bathroom. Before I could turn the knob, I was face-to-face with daddy.
"Where were you?"
He asked. Nothing but pure seriousness on face."I went to work, then I forgot your food, so I had to turn around, then I got pulle--"
"Stop lying."
I look at him intensely. I've never lied to him before. Why would I lie to him now?
"What?"
"Stop fucking lying."
He looked at me for a second before speaking.
"I love you, Avery. Don't you realize that? Why can't you see that everything I do, I do for you?" He asked while stepping closer to me with each word.
"Your problem is that you're unappreciative."
"Sir--"
Smack!
I should've seen that one coming.
"Did I tell you to speak?"
I shook my head slightly & sniffed.
"You don't know how to listen. You don't know how to obey. You don't know how treat me with respect."
Smack!
He hit me again. This time knocking me on the floor. Then walking out of the room.
I laid there, crying. Shortly after, he came back into the room with my car keys and Starbucks cup in his hand.
He looked down and threw the cup at me.
"So, you forgot my food, but you had enough time to get yourself something?"
He took the damp receipt off the cup and read it to me.
"One Iced Coffee, One Iced Tea, Chicken Artichoke on Ancient Grain Flatbread, Hearty Veggie & Brown Rice Salad Bowl. Total price, $38.76."
He looked at me. "I know you didn't eat all that by yourself."
I looked at him, already having an idea of where this conversation is going.
"So, who is he?"
I scoffed, shaking my head. No longer in pain. I've become immune to the feelings his beatings have caused.
"There is no one else. Jer asked me to get--"
Smack!
"That first sentence alone was a fucking lie. Would you like it if I lied to you? Huh? Would you like it if I lied to you, Avery?!"
He asked, talking through gritted teeth and hitting me with just about every word. By now, I could feel the left side of my face swelling up.
He grabbed my face into his hands and kissed me. Out of instinct, I kissed back.
"I love you, Ave. You're the only woman for me. It's just sometimes you make me so mad." He said, looking away & balling up his fists.
"Do you love me?"
I looked into his eyes, seeing a tear threaten to fall from them.
"Do you love me?" He asked again.
"Yes. I do, papi."
"Well then marry me."
What?! Marry him?! He beats me everyday and treats me like trash. How could I marry him?!
But he's the only man I've ever loved. The only man who has ever cared. The only man to bring me into his home with open arms when I had nowhere else to go. The only man to love me.
"Avery.. Will you marry me?"
He pulled out a small white box that I wasn't aware he was carrying.
I tried to speak, but nothing would come out. I swallowed a lump in my throat and looked into his eyes..
"Yes, daddy. I will marry you."
