~Vic's POV~
Fifth period went by in a blur. No one I knew was there with me, not even Bruce. For once today, I paid close attention to the lesson at hand.

The teacher was a very round, semi-young looking lady, with plain brown hair and pale eyes. She was, overall, unremarkable in every way. Her name was Ms. Crowe, and she instantly became my favorite.

Sixth hour, on the other hand, had everyone I knew: Kellin, Jaime, Justin, Katelynn, and Bruce. Bruce sat in the back of the room with his three other jock friends. Intent on avoiding him, Kellin, Katelynn, Justin, Jaime and I sat in the front.

"How was fifth period? Was Bruce there?"
Kellin asked me, his eyebrows drawn in concern.
"Nah. It was nice; I really like Ms. Crowe,"
I replied, smiling. Kellin exhaled in relief.
"Good,"
he said. Once again, he reached out to hold my hand.

"Look at his face though,"
Justin whispered from beside me, sending Katelynn into fits of giggles. Bruce sat in the back of the room, his finger shoved carelessly up his nose. "He's a..."
Jaime started, laughter taking him over.
"He's a gold digger."
Kellin laughed loudly, clamping his hand over his mouth when Mr. Sparrow, the history teacher, turned to glare at him. Kellin mumbled a halfhearted "sorry," then proceeded to pull his mouth underneath his sweatshirt and laugh more.
He's so cute when he laughs.

We were all happy to hear the final bell ring. Justin was out the door first, followed by Katelynn, Jaime, and Kellin. Bruce stopped me at the door, yanking me backwards by my shirt collar.
"Where do you think you're going, Fuentes?"
He said menacingly. I gulped.
"T-to my locker. You got a problem with that?"
I tried so hard to keep the quiver out of my voice.

Bruce kicked the back of my legs and I crashed to the floor, slamming my knees into the dirty tile. He was yelling something at me, something about showing him more respect, but I couldn't hear him anymore. I scrambled to my feet, running at full speed down the hallway.

I reached my locker out of breath.
"You okay?"
Kellin asked me. I nodded.
"Yeah... I just lost you guys in the crowd. I was worried I wouldn't make it to my locker,"
I lied. Kellin's shoulders relaxed.
"Oh. Hey, do you wanna come over tonight?"
I smiled at the eager look on his face. "Sure, that'd be great."
"So where do you live again? We might be able to walk home together."
"I live on Oak street."
Kellin grinned.
"Cool, I live on Maple. Shall we go then?"
He asked, offering me his arm. I took it gratefully and started out of the school with him, waving goodbye to Katelynn, Justin, and Jaime.

We walked in silence, his pastel blue vans in perfect step with my black converse. I watched his hair blow in the light September wind, lost in thought. I was highly aware of his cold hand now laced with my warm one. How could he be so cold?
"Kellin, are you cold?"
I asked him. He shivered a little.
"Yeah, a little bit I guess..."
I released his hand and shrugged my jacket off, not feeling the cold at all. Despite his protests, I put it around his shoulders and forced his arms through the holes. He sighed into the warmth. "D-damn Vic, you're hot."
I laughed, cocking my head to the side. "Oh really? That sounded kinda sexual,"
I teased. His pale cheeks flushed scarlet and I smiled at him, taking his hand back in mine.

"Well, this is where we part ways." Kellin said, stopping. He went to peel off my jacket, but I stopped him.
"Just keep it; I have a million more." He smiled.
"Thank you- lavender is my favorite color anyway."
He replied, glancing down at the fabric appreciatively.
"So I guess I'll pick you up at six then?" He said, looking up at me under thick eyelashes.
"Yeah. See you then."
He lingered for a moment, then pulled me into a hug.

I hugged him back, surprised but happy. He smiled at me one last time before heading down Maple street, while I walked left towards Oak street.

"Victor?"
My mother called when I walked inside. She poked her head out from the kitchen, and I heard a bowl clatter to the floor.
"Honey- what happened to your eye?" She said, rushing up to me. I internal swore- I had forgotten about my black eye. My mother's flowered apron was stained with cookie dough, and her dark hair was tied back into a messy bun. My brother Mike trotted down the stairs as well, stopping to stare at me.
"Woah, dude- who did you get in a fight with?" I shook my head, ignoring Mike.
"No mom, it's nothing, really. I just, er, fell. On the sidewalk. Walking home."
I cringed at how unbelievable I sounded, even to myself.
"Victor, if someone's hurting you-"
I sighed.
"Mom, no ones hurting me. I only fell." She still looked skeptical, so I added:
"I made a lot of friends today, though." She smiled at that news.
"Oh, really love? That's great!"
I grinned back at her.
"Actually, one of them wants me to come over. He said he'd pick me up at six,"
I said casually. My mother's dark eyes lit up.
"Alright! This is wonderful! I was worried about how people would treat you at public school, I would've been more than willing to switch you back to homeschool if it hadn't gone well, not that I'm disappointed I don't have you in class anymore, but this is-"
I held a finger to her lips.
"It's okay mom. Today was great."
